If you haven't seen this yet, you need to give it a watch. It's 25 minutes, but worth it.

Geez. Just put yourself in the mind of the guy with the camera for the first few minutes and start trying to work out a worst case scenario for what you think is about to unfold, knowing that a tsunami is coming.

One thing that stuck out to me was the seeming lack of hysteria you might expect. But I suppose people could have just been in shock at what they were seeing.
