  • 2025 - Severe Storms (T-Storms and Blizzards)

Looks like 2024 will go out like a lamb. Overall, it was a semi-active year for Kansas, though semi-quiet for SC Kansas tornado-wise.

Overall, the Wichita Warning Forecast Office recorded 14 severe weather events, the main of which were straight-line wind events.

Here is a summary map of 2024 Events.

...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY
    AFTERNOON...

    * WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow
accumulations between 2 and 4 inches and ice accumulations up to
one half of an inch possible. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.

    * WHERE...Portions of South Central and Southeast Kansas.

    * WHEN...From Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon.

    * IMPACTS...Roads will likely become slick and hazardous. Whiteout
conditions are possible and may make travel treacherous if not
impossible and potentially life-threatening. Power outages and
tree damage are likely due to the ice and strong wind gusts.

    PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation.

Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely
necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden
changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the
motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your
destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially
cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is
winterized and in good working order.

Here are the Snow and Freezing rain predictions. Expect them to change. It looks like the biggest threat for Wichita is the potential for freezing rain accumulation.

Starting saturday morning thru Sunday. For Wichita (and south) the biggest threat looks to be freezing rain. North Central/North Eastern Kansas is heavy snow.

But there is a lot of uncertainty. HRRR is showing warm air wrapping in and keeping the Wichita above freezing to at least early Sunday morning. The only consistency in the models is that we will get about 0.75" in precipitation.

And I still wouldn’t trade a winter here for a winter there. Screw THAT.
