  • I have a little sports trivia question...

I was listening to the radio this afternoon and was surprised to find out which school offers the most D1 scholarship athletic programs in the country. Do you know who it is? No Googlers please.

My best guess without Googling is Stanford.

Nope! But you might be in the right ballpark. What made you think of them?

The correct answer enjoys almost 3x as many D1 sports teams as WSU.

I thought Stanford first as well, but they have some money issues when it comes to athletics. I then started thinking non football schools that participate in the bizarre sports like sailing and crew. My mind went northeast and west coast. Too expensive out west. Back to the NE. So many tiny schools that might have 30 programs that nobody has ever heard of ......then I went back to money. I first thought OSU or OU with wrestling, gymnastics etc. Maybe Texas or A&M but too many sports need different conditions and history. Cold sports...back to money and the NE area. Michigan and Ohio State. Seems like the Buckeyes have some history of shooting sports ...Michigan probably has more money. Flip a coin....heads Michigan, tails The Ohio State.

Tails. I'll guess The Ohio State University.

Stay with the sailing and crew theme. But now add in money. And I mean REAL money.

Harvard? Nearly every single coach's salary is covered by endowments.

                      Bingo!

"Harvard is home to 42 nation-leading Division I intercollegiate sports teams."

Harvard is a sports-crazy school. They do it all!

This enraged Lib on NPR said Harvard uses sports scholarships to get their "country club boys" through the backdoor. And if you want to get through the front door and can't qualify academically, $20M is the ticket for entry.

I don't know about quantity but I pointed out in prior posts that Harvard's athletics endowment machine means that in the not too far future their coaches will earn a higher salary than the highest paid pro coaches in each of their respective sports. They will have the ability to buy any coach they want, even from the pros.

                            We need an athletics endowment.
