  • Greyhound Racing

I spent a lot of time watching the dogs run at WGP. I miss the track and wish it hadn't closed but understand why.

Planning some trips recently, I wanted to check on what tracks still ran because it's not something I've seen much about lately.

I was a little (ok a lot) surprised that Greyhound racing is all but defunct in this country.

There are currently only 3 operating tracks....one in West Memphis (Southland) and 2 in West Virginia.

I could be wrong, but I believe Southland is the track they used in the movie The Firm. It's actually located in West Memphis, AR. Arkansas has outlawed greyhound racing effective 1.1.23 and so Southland has 6 days of racing this year and then will close permanently.

In all, that will mean 43 states will have outlawed GH racing, leaving only WV with active racing and Alabama, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Texas & Wisconsin with no active tracks but where racing is at least currently, still legal.

One wonders if community leaders used their brains back in 2008 (I think?) when it was put to a vote if we wouldn't have a vibrant casino/racing park area just north of Wichita proper.

Trivia on WGP, Wichita Thunder GM and overall great (and I mean GREAT) guy Joel Lomurno was likely the best teller in the history of WGP back in it's infancy.

Yeah, now the only thing greyhounds are used for is killing coyotes.

Agreed on Joel!! Absolutely fantastic dude!

Come out to San Diego and hit up Del Mar for some great horse racing, and magnificent "scenery"...if you catch my drift. Opening day in July is a must for anyone's bucket list, IMO.

Missed this at the time. I have been to Del Mar, on 3 different occasions. By far and away my favorite horse track. Where the Turf meets the Surf.
