Actually, betting via incentives and promos is a way to beat the casino (of course). I remember watching a documentary on a couple that paid cash for a house in Las Vegas from couponing/free rolling the casinos to death. They played primarily video poker which offered the best odds in Vegas at the time. This was decades ago.

As far as the downtown casino is concerned: we were getting a casino whether we liked it or not. It was either gonna be Mulvane or downtown Wichita. Obviously the destruction to our community was going to be the same at either location. But if it was in Wichita, we would benefit from the extra hotel space (and recreation for tourists) as well as another 1/2/1% tax revenue on the gross. Our retarded populace voted to have it built just outside the county (in Mulvane) so we would get the most economic damage while losing out on the most economic gain. Lose-lose.

In my youth, when I lived mostly hand to mouth, I would go to Vegas routinely because it was the best value out there. Fly cheap, stay cheap, play cheap. A trip to Vegas was the best bang for the entertainment dollar, by far, outside of a specific event (like Arch Madness for instance). Nowadays, when disposable income is much more plentiful, Vegas is all but a non-starter. The costs are out of control, everyone has their hand out and you get almost no value. I've gone to see the Shocks, but other than that, I doubt I'll make a return visit. And I seriously considered a 2nd home there as a part time retirement destination, spending quite a bit of time researching areas and homes to purchase. I am thrilled I never pulled that trigger.

Eagle - TV star Kelsey Grammer arrives in Wichita today for a string of public appearances

Just a reminder: Today’s the day that Emmy-winning actor Kelsey Grammer arrives in Wichita for several days worth of appearances.

Grammer — who famously portrayed Frasier Crane on “Cheers” and on its spin-off show “Frasier” in the 1990s and early 2000s — will make his first stop from 2 to 5 p.m. at Jacob Liquor Exchange, 3049 N. Rock Road. After that, he’ll be at The Monarch, 579 W. Douglas, guest bartending from 6 to 9 p.m.

He’ll also make multiple stops around town every day though Saturday. When he’s at liquor stores, he’ll be participating in tastings and talking beer. At local bars, he’ll be behind the bar as a guest bartender. You can see the full schedule below.

Grammer has come to Wichita to help promote a new partnership he’s made with Wichita Brewing Company, which has two (and soon to be three) breweries in Wichita plus a big production and canning facility at 727 E. Osie.

WBC has made a deal with Grammer, who since 2015 has owned a brewery called Faith American Brewing Company in the Catskills of New York state.

Yeah, Vegas is pretty cringe. Good call. Wouldn't be my kind of weather either. I would rather blow my brains out than sit in a noisy casino all day. It would make no difference if they were paying me to sit there.

My thoughts (at the time) were more along the lines of good value on entertainment and dining. There was a time that locals were like kings living in Vegas. Let the tourists drop their cash and take advantage of all the freebies and fantastic deals that pop up all over town, not just the strip (or stay off the strip completely). If you're local, you can hit literally dozens of places off the strip and get deals galore (or you used to be able to).

Yes, it's still a far better value at places on Boulder Highway (for instance) but the variety and value have diminished so much that the city is well past it's best by date. Also, many of those areas have become overrun with criminal elements, which didn't use to be the case. An example: The old Hard Rock (just off strip) served a special 24/7 in their coffee shop, 8 oz steak, potato, veggie for 7.77. Not that long ago, but let's call it $14 today. It was fantastic. Good steak. Cooked exactly the way you wanted...baker with all the sides....any time, day or night. Today, Virgin Hotel (took over Hard Rock) will happily sell you a $23 turkey sandwich or a $24 hamburger. Seriously. Chicken tenders for $18. A chicken Ceasar salad will set you back $26. Even the LVA, which has a top 10 for at least 35 years, can only come up with a $6 breakfast at Emerald Island which is fine but you get basically the same thing at IHOP even on the strip for $7. To get to Emerald Island you have to go out past Henderson. It would be similar to Andover residents going to West Goddard for an average breakfast. If there was stupid traffic here.

Sorry for my Vegas rant. Carry on before I start whining about the long lost late night $3 steak dinner at Binions. Or the deli there. Or the chili. Grrrr.

Blinatumomab, which recently completed clinical trials and has won approval from the FDA, is a drug designed to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia, one of the most common types of blood and bone marrow cancer. It causes the body to produce too many lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.

The disease has a rapid onset. If left untreated, death can happen within a matter of months.

Blinatumomab uses the patient’s immune system to fight the disease. It teaches the body’s T-cells, a type of white blood cell, to recognize and destroy leukemia cells.
