  • $400 billion new city concept planned

Arizona Breaking news, local stories, and On Your Side investigations from the state’s largest television newsroom.

The former Walmart executive last week unveiled plans for Telosa, a sustainable metropolis that he hopes to create, from scratch, in the American desert. The ambitious 150,000-acre proposal promises eco-friendly architecture, sustainable energy production and a purportedly drought-resistant water system. A so-called "15-minute city design" will allow residents to access their workplaces, schools and amenities within a quarter-hour commute of their homes.
In addition to innovative urban design, the project also promises transparent governance and what it calls a "new model for society." Taking its name from the ancient Greek word "telos" (a term used by the philosopher Aristotle to describe an inherent or higher purpose), the city would allow residents to "participate in the decision-making and budgeting process." A community endowment will meanwhile offer residents shared ownership of the land.
    (emphasis mine)

On Telosa's official website, Lore explains that he was inspired by American economist and social theorist Henry George. The investor cites capitalism's "significant flaws," attributing many of them to "the land ownership model that America was built on."
    (emphasis mine)

    Ah, the democratic Socialist's utopia.

The erosion of individual property rights under the illusion of shared ownership, will be one more nail in the coffin of individual liberty.

Claiming total government transparency where everyone can participate in the decision-making and budgeting process is naive, at best. Our founders knew that wouldn't work.

This doesn't sound like an experiment I'd want to be a part of.

Bold endeavor……considering he probably accumulated his wealth through capitalism.

At least three of the locations being scouted lack a primary need for sustainability...Water. Unless they can devise suits that trap the body fluids like in the book Dune. The book was great the two movies not so much. And I did enjoy the first Bladerunner movie.

The article says it will have a drought resistant water system, and so it shall!

If this city actually gets built it is destined to fail. The collective mindset in this kind of scale does not work in reality, though I get the fantasy land version of it.

With that said, if this city gets built it is possible that it does lead to some new research and possible future improvements in some areas of life that can be taken into the real world. I have no problem with investors spending money to build something like this and people who voluntarily partake in the experiment knowing what it is. If it somehow ended up working for them, great. But don't expect the full point of the experiment to spread across the country as that will never take. Well, I can't predict the future but it wouldn't happen in our lifetime.

So I support the endeavor for what it is and the possible positives that could come out of it from a tech standpoint. The sociopolitical part can piss off.

No. But did a quick search, very quick. It seems to have become a valuable science tool for testing along earth related sciences.

Appears they had an unforseen issue arise that shutdown the experiment, but that's also how we learn and make advancements. Honestly, more experimentation like that may be needed if there is indeed a desire to populate Mars or the Moon in the future on some level.

I may have to do more reading into it and get more details of what went on. I'm guessing it wasn't exactly like BioDome.

There was a change in external management during the experiment. The old management team broke in and warned the scientists of impending doom and broke a bunch of stuff.

Then teams was two sides of scientists that formed on the inside and they got into physical altercations.

7 months in they ran out of oxygen and killed all the insects. They evacuated and had to pump in a bunch of oxygen. They went back in, then someone got hurt, left and came in with another year of supplies since they had already depleted the majority of their man made products.

It’s a disaster that psychologists love to study, but very few ecologists will touch.
