  • Scheels is coming to Towne East

Guess it is too early to call the death of Towne East. At least one company is seeing fit to dump a massive wad of change into a location there.

They're apparently going to take the old Sears space and convert it to their use and design, which I would assume means a fairly massive rejiggering of the structure. Scheels stores are cavernous, with a large two to three story central airspace of sorts in the center of the store, and the various departments surrounding the central space spread over a couple of floors. The Scheels feel a bit like a mini mall into themselves due to this design.

Anyway, if you're not familiar with Scheels, this is a nice addition to Wichita retail. Will be the biggest sports store in Wichita by a long shot at 220,000 SF. Roughly 3 times the size of say our Cabela's. Nothing crazy exciting, just a big damn sports store. Dicks or Academy on horse sterioids.

The Scheels in Overland Park is top notch. That would be impressive if it came close to that.

Outstanding anchor tenant! Malls have got to give something to consumers to lure them back besides just retailers. Tourist-like shopping experiences are a great first step. They should also attempt to offer original eateries/restaurants. People still happily go to restaurants like they always have. TE could have 3 or 4 top notch dining establishments spread around. They've got to get away from "mall food". Long gone are the days where people will just eat out of convenience. Maybe the restaurant can be the target and they shop out of convenience now.

The one in Wichita won't have that as part of the design. Whomever runs the Scheels FB page already answered that on FB. I'm guessing the ceiling height won't allow it, even if they open it up in the central corridor of the store. I bet it will be a less "airy" Scheels, since they are limited to the proportions of the old Sears. It's two stories, but an old school two stories.

No surprise. It's Wichita after all. We never get the "ferris wheel" of anything...

Scheels is where I buy a bụnch of ammo. They carry loads and loads. I do not buy shotgun rounds at Scheels. Their bicycle department used to be better, at least for me, they are giving more and more space to ebikes, and less to gravel and road bikes. Decent golf department and fantastic outdoors and camping. You can spend a lot of time and money there. I'm not sure just how big the Omaha Scheels is, but it's two floors with a ferris wheel in the middle. Fun store.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

We'll get the Wichita version. 2 floors with 9 foot ceilings. Overgrown Gander Mountain.

That would suck if that's what ended up happening. Don't think it will be that bad.

I've never ridden the ferris wheel, never had any desire to ride the ferris wheel. If you don't want to ride the ferris wheel, 9 foot ceilings are plenty big. To me, the ferris wheel is dead space. And since I've gone low carb, I have no use for the candy and fudge. Cold, you'll love the firearms and ammo!

I'm not into this crap, so I have no idea who buys ithem or what the value is, but they sell these elaborate swords there that my douchy, DND son absolutely geeks over.

Scheels is solid, the KC store has the Ferris wheel. Not sure why Wichita wouldn't. Just demolish the old Sears and do it right. If I owned towne East, I would almost try and demand that it be so. The full strength Scheels in that mall would single-handedly bring it back to relevance.

That and an old school arcade.

One more thing, Scheel's started in Mn moved headquarters to ND, and expanded from the northern plains. With the exception of Dallas, Wichita is an outlier on the Scheel's footprint. Wichita getting a Scheel's, ferris wheel or not, is a huge get. And yes, way better than Gander Mountain.
