Martin is good, were the others truly stand up comedians?

There are soooo many. Other problems are "type" of comedy, era, TV, movies, standup, wit. Along with yours, Brooks, Carrey, Hope, Williams, Martin, Newhart are in the discussion as well for me. Era is maybe the most tough. I know at one time Red Skelton would have been at the top due to movies, TV, standup, but if you watch his old shows today, they just don't hold up. I still think he was a great human being and artist.

Some comedians, I just can't stand: the latest is Sasha Cohen. Others: Seinfeld (not bad), Lewis, Sandler, I'm sure there is more.

Eddie Murphy was great on SNL and great early in movies, but later movies were a big disappointment. There is so much personal taste when it comes to comedy.

Add: Sorry, I didn't follow your rules on just "stand up". Although, most probably started there.

Jack Black stand-up is freaking hilarious. Eddie Murphy RAW is the classic standup of my generation. Not sure about Carrey.

I missed the standup rule, but specifically chose guys that were top of their class at both. I'd nix Carrey and add Dangerfield if standup is the key requirement.

In listening to interviews or on a talk show, I thought Robin Williams and Bob Newhart were two of the fastest wits. The 2 were complete opposites. Williams "outlandish", Newhart "quite and dry". If you didn't pay attention to Newhart, you'd miss it. No way you'd miss Williams.

As stand-up comics, I'd probably put Steve Martin in place of Don Rickles. I liked Rickles, but he was a "specialist" and you knew what was coming.

Admittedly, I watch very little stand up comics on TV. When I do, I'm usually disappointed or don't like their brand of comedy.

That said, a hidden gem for me was John Pinette.

Foxworthy gets points for being funny and clean.

                          That was good.

I almost put Robin Williams on my list. Probably should have.

That's not even his best stuff. I was looking for a short video.
