  • North High Redskins no more.

    https://www.kansas.com/news/local/ed...249109840.html.

I'm a 1981 North High grad. The mascot name has been a constant embarrassment. About damned time.
Dominance is a state of mind.

Looking forward to hearing the accounts of people who have been directly hurt because of this nickname.

      HINT: it's zero.

Before too long, nobody will even remember what a Native American is. They will be erased from existence.

I guess there's an easy way to obtain clarification on this Einstein-esque paradox. Head on down to the nearest Rez, saunter up to an old boy and say, "Hey there Redskin!!!"

          Let me know what happens.

The first documented use of the term redskin was by Chief Mosquito in a letter to the British differentiating the native peoples from the white skinned people who were exploring west. He was promising protection and safe passage and would defend them against any other redskins that may be hostile.

I want to say that was around 1770.

I'm not sure when someone decided it was an evil slur, but that would come some 200 years later.

It's not been an embarrassment. Change to something to honor native Americans.

Wasn't that long ago they went through this name change thing and most of the Native Americans in the area, including their leaders, were NOT offended by it. So they kept the name.

I'm hoping they select a name like the Warriors and keep all the great artwork. All that I've seen are a tribute to the native people and it would be awful if it could not be removed without damage or destroying it.

Have several native friends who actually live on reservations here in socal. To a man they have told me they are not offended or put off by the terms Indian, Redskin, etc. I don't use the term with them but it is not something they lose sleep over one bit. It's literally another "woke" issue mainly brought on by non-natives who think they know what's best for others.

"Woke" is not limited by race/nationality and so forth. I know of a few woke indigenous people locally that were that way before it was fashionable.

There are probably zero pure Native-Americans in America today, but I have tremendous respect for the history of Native-Americans and we need to teach their history with accuracy. However, I look forward to the day (not too far off probably), when we have zero pure men and women gender identities. Our children are being taught a load of crap

Are we going to change the name of Wichita. It has an Indian reference. What about the Keeper of the Plains. Tear it down. It's blasphemy.

There are many that have continued to marry within their tribe. Go north.

The North High First People’s. Clovis. Native Americans.

Nah, best to just forget about those that were conquered by European explorers. Maybe if we just gave them a place where they could live alone in socialism without resources, that would be a good way to honor them.
