The Dallas Cowboys may have the well-known nickname "America's Team" and one of the biggest sports followings in the world, but one New Jersey columnist said that while the team may be loved by many, there are plenty of reasons to hate the "pompous franchise."
As Star-Ledger columnist Steve Politi wrote about the Cowboys: "Hating the Cowboys is like hating beets or telemarketers. If you can’t hate a franchise pompous enough to bill itself as “America’s Team” (2) — and by the way, did our ballots get lost in the mail? — you simply aren’t trying."
While plenty of opposing fans have their own feelings about the Cowboys, Politi tries to reason with readers -- ahead of Sunday night's NFC East battle -- that aside from the usual reasons to hate the team, one of the biggest could be owner Jerry Jones.
"Yes, Jones is the embodiment of the hate these days — a man who led even Wellington Mara to say, after a Giants win in 1996, 'It’s nice to see arrogance humbled.'" Politi wrote. "He is the ultimate meddling owner (8), a rich guy who insists on hogging the spotlight (9), an egomaniac who actually made a trip to the sidelines last week to make sure his head coach was smart enough to keep his injured quarterback out of a meaningless game (10)."
Despite the negative comments about the Cowboys from a columnist in enemy territory, fans of "America's Team" may actually agree with Politi on the final point.
