  • 2011 Kansas City Chiefs Off-season

    QB Situation

Still think we need to sign Kyle Orton to 2-3 year deal.
Keep Cassel, obviously. Although, he is not the answer.

    Head Coaching Job
    --Don't hire Josh McDaniels.

#1- hire a coach that has been there, done that. These young gun unproven head coaches are not for a rebuilding team.

#2- get a franchise QB. The road to #2 runs directly through the draft.

#3- Shore up young GOOD talent on the O line. Just as Payton showed how valuble he is to the Colts, Brian Waters showed his worth, however, he was old and his card was punched.

#4- D-line. Just make it more competitive. Young, but good. The talent is there, just needs push.

#5- resign the pillars of this team. Carr and Bowe. Breaston and McClain also need to come back.

#6- Get an experienced OC. Bill is not bad, but I want to see a more explosive offense, not bubble screen after bubble screen. Those can backfire just as easily as they can put points on the board.

#7- hire a knee specialized trainer.

      That is all.

#6- how about Norv Turner? Excellent OC and will need a job. He is also really easy to get along with, which is his demise as a HC but OC would be perfect.

Stuff I read is that McDaniels is going to be hired as the OC

Getting a franchise QB is rather obvious and it's obvious that Cassel and Orton aren't franchise QB's. However, finding franchise QB's through the draft when you draft
#13, 14, or 15 probably won't happen. Remember that most of the first 10 picks are looking for a franchise QB too. I haven't heard about too many sleepers yet but they may have to get lucky in the second or third round (in any case, that means that they have to re-sign Cassel or Orton). They need OL help and may find a starter in the first round. Trading up is iffy because like Oakland, trading first round draft choices for an unproven or older Qb is a bad risk. One thing that seems apparent is that the Chiefs don't see Stanzi as the answer or they would have given him an opportunity this season to show what he might be capable of. To sum up, at this time, I don't see a franchise QB for the Chiefs this year.

                17. Cincinnati Bengals (received via trade from Oakland Raiders, 8-8)
                16. New York Jets, 8-8
                15. Philadelphia Eagles, 8-8
                14. Dallas Cowboys, 8-8
                13. Arizona Cardinals, 8-8
                12. Kansas City Chiefs, 7-9*
                11. Seattle Seahawks, 7-9*
                10. Buffalo Bills, 6-10
                9. Miami Dolphins, 6-10^
                8. Carolina Panthers, 6-10^
                7. Jacksonville Jaguars, 5-11
                6. Washington Redskins, 5-11
                5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 4-12
                4. Cleveland Browns, 4-12
                3. Minnesota Vikings, 3-13
                2. St. Louis Rams, 2-14
                1. Indianapolis Colts, 2-14

*Order of these 7-9 teams to be determined by coin flip at scouting combine.
^Order of these 6-10 teams to be determined by coin flip at scouting combine.
Teams ahead of KC that need a QB
                3. Minnesota Vikings, 3-13
                4. Cleveland Browns, 4-12
                6. Washington Redskins, 5-11
                7. Jacksonville Jaguars, 5-11

All of these teams need solid veteran leadership, and Orton and Cassel can do that for them.

These teams are set at QB

                2. St. Louis Rams, 2-14
                5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 4-12
                8. Carolina Panthers, 6-10^

St. Louis needs to surround Bradford with offensive talent. STL can get great talent at the 11-12 spot and the front offices have good relationships. KC can trade for the #2 pick, but it will hurt. Look to say goodbye to DBowe, because if thats what it takes, they will do it.

Vikes need a QB. Cassel would be a perfect fit.

Matt Flynn. I see this happening. KC uses their enormous cap space to outbid all others, keeps their first round pick, drafts a receiver, and gathers more talent. Trades Cassel for a 5th round pick. Gets more talent.

Drafting OL in the first round is a Peterson move. Pioli will protect the QB with Veteran OL. Thats the way he has always done it. Thats the Patriot Way.

Lot's of possible scenarios. Could work out that way. Flynn had a great game yesterday but if he's as good as that, those other teams that need QB's would like him too. We'll see.

The only reason to jump to 2 is to take RG3. Already there is talk that it will take the equivelant of 4 #1's to move into that spot. That is a ton. I don't think Bowe will be very sought after. Cassell has virtually zero trade value.

Chiefs may like Landry Jones, Ryan Tannehill, or Brandon Weedon and one of them could drop to them in the second round.

Colts owner in a suprised move fires GM Bill Polian. Colts owner used the word "rebuilding" so that make you wonder whether they will trade away Peyton Manning? Would Pioli pull a "Montana" and trade for Peyton? Chiefs are really in their window if they are going to do something the time is now. Go after Manning and hit the free agent market hard with all their cap room.

Colts are in a huge bind with Peyton, they either have to cut manning by march 8th or pay him 28 million this year. They cant even discuss trading him until March 13th. So they will either keep him or cut him.

If the Chiefs signed Manning, we would be instant super bowl contenders next year, especially if we drafted a right tackle in the 1st next year.
