I was a Fr in HS in a vocational agriculture class when we had a lesson on various ways to prepare concrete. Concrete is an aggregate (gravel, sand, etc.) covered by concrete to form cement.
Got to tell a story.
Truman Diener was teaching us about cement and how the smaller the aggregate, the more cement would be required to coat all the aggregate.
To illustrate he pulled out an apple and asked if anybody had a knife. That was a different time and everybody in the class had a knife in their pocket. He used Myron Kliewer's knife to cut the apple.
As he cut the apple he explained that if he was covering the apple, he still had to cover the outside of the apple, plus all the new surfaces he had exposed. He continued cutting the apple until he had one piece for everyone in the class. That was a good way to learn that principle.
He handed out the apple pieces and we ate them.
Myron asked if we wanted to know what was the last thing he had done with that knife. Turned out he had used it the day before to castrate some pigs.
