I wonder if the same kind of skit mocking, say, Jesse Jackson (whom they've used many times, just not in a religious way) would be received quite so well?

I have no dog in the Tebow hunt. I simply don't get the hatred that's spewed about him. If you are a Chiefs fan and you want Denver to lose and you don't like him because he's 7-2, I get that. I don't get the casual or even the non-fan that ridicules him or wants him to fail.

Has he done something really bad I don't know about? Is he somehow offending people by putting his faith front and center? I just don't get it...frankly, I hope I never do because I believe the hate is an extension of the distrust and lack of satisfaction in our own society. Can it really be that people don't like him because they just don't like themselves all that much and they want to bring him down to their own level of disappointment? I think so....

    And it is sad.
Right now hate and closed-mindedness is spewed just about everywhere from every angle in our society - media, politics, religion, online on the interwebs, and in real life. We do an awful lot of talking in this country and very little real listening.
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind. ~Dr. Seuss

I think its what I call the "Duke" factor. ESPN does nothing but talk about him, and I think people get sick of it. This is no lie, I watched NFL countdown on Sunday morning, and they spend at least 50% of the show talking about him.

Really tired of the media frenzy regarding Tebow.

SNL is very rarely funny anymore.

I found this skit pretty funny, but there were places where I was uncomfortable (good word, Doc).

As a Christian nation, it's probably alright to make fun of Christianity.

Sadly, a similar skit aimed at Muslims, blacks, Hispanics, etc, would not be tolerated. I find THAT offensive.

The skit as far as I'm concerned isnt aimed at Christianity as much as it is a the the over the top and in your face of "I'm Tebow and I love Jesus Christ" I am happy he does and I applaud him for wanting to share his love with everybody. But as far as I'm concerned its not different than Tom Cruise spouting off about Scientology. Tim - you're job is play football. Just play the game and live your life.

regarding the mocking of Muslims, Blacks and others..... Thats another argument and one nobody on this board is ready to "seriously" have. Our society has a history of mocking non-whites and non-Christians.

Controversy aside, Damon Wayans as Jesus and Jim Carrey as Tebow would have been way funnier. In Living Color was soooo much better than the last two decades of SNL.

Of course Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd would have torn that skit up and made it funny too.

When you collaborate with Focus on the Family to produce a partisan commercial on possibly the most controversial topic of the generation, then, yeah, you're pretty much begging to be a lightening rod figure. Let's not pretend otherwise.

I enjoy the NFL and I enjoy watching someone attempt to play the game with unconventional methods/abilities. I enjoy watching Tim Tebow, but he's not shy about drawing attention to his faith and associates closely with people who preach about culture war between Christian's and the remainder of the planet (Who, of course, are persecutors of the faith). Aren't his parents 'Christian missionaries' in a predominately catholic country?
So when did it become unusual for many individuals, strong of faith, to evangelize, particularly if they may be in a position to draw attention? And, yeah, they expect to be a lighting rod. Nothing new here. Just because he throws the hook in the water doesn't mean the fish have to bite. Much like a forum troll, the best way of being sure he continues to pop up in front of your face is to give him attention. As long as the media feels Tebow's faith is worth their rewards for stirring the pot, it will continue.

Personally, I've paid very little, to no attention to Tebow except for his unexpected success on the field and, as you said, his unconventional methods. Hey, if his faith is what he believes has brought him success, good for him. I can certainly think of a lot of other religious wackos out there that truly deserve to be skewered by comedians. But in this case, some people seem to be almost jealous/resentful of his success due to his belief in his faith.

I recommend some of you actually read about his behavior OFF the field instead of just commenting based on headlines and forum chatter.

To compare him to forum troll or religious whacko ... is .. well .... ????

I think it would come off better if you understood the enigma before commenting on it.

No doubt, very true. On the other hand, I used poor verbage as it was not my intent to compare him to "other religious wackos", but "real religious wackos". My error. As for the troll mention, the comparison was not that Tebow=troll, but to make a comparison of two continuing events, one being the baiting of a troll that posters would understand, and the other, their percieved constant media hype over Tebow. Posters ignore a troll, he normally goes away. People ignore media hype, the media hype generally goes away.

Without understanding him better, I have no bone to pick with Tebow, his faith, and how that faith has helped him on the field and in his life. As I said, good for him!

                      Ah that makes more sense.

I think that is why people have issues. Christians are fair game but nobody else can be touched.
                        a) False equivalency. The cultural status of the religion is relevant.
                        b) Not sure where you get the idea that 'Christians are fair game but nobody else can be touched.' You might want to get a TV and check the current status of comedy vis-a-vis appropriate topics. Even as a percentage of mean spirited (not to mention degree of spiritedness) jokes/skits/etc about Christians are not even close to a majority. Seriously.

Yes, all Muslims... all of 'em. Maybe just enough to point a news camera towards... it must be true. ;-)

Right on. Spewed is a good word for it. I would just add that a good deal of the hate and closed-mindedness you reference can be fairly easily tempered or avoided. I'm firmly with Jake Plumber on this one:
"Tebow, regardless of whether I wish he'd just shut up after a game and go hug his teammates, I think he's a winner and I respect that about him. I think that when he accepts the fact that we know that he loves Jesus Christ, then I think I'll like him a little better. I don't hate him because of that, I just would rather not have to hear that every single time he takes a good snap or makes a good handoff.

"Like you know, I understand dude where you're coming from ... but he is a baller."

I liked it. Then again, I have a pretty dark sense of humor. Case in point-
Jesus was too busy killing Kim Jong Il to help Tim Tebow beat the Patriots.

No, I actually did consider which should play the part of Jesus. Either one of them would nail it. The problem is Wayans as Tebow. He's too bald to play Tebow.

Just stumbled on this pretty interesting write-up on Tebow:
