Uhhhhh, no. Since the field expanded to 64 teams, only 4 times has the A.P. number 1 ranked team won the national championship. We have recent history too. Does KU not remember Virginia in 2018? They finished the regular season as the number 1 ranked team then got bounced from the tourney to 16 seed UMBC.
