Drummer I played with for a couple of years was from Chicago. In Chicago, he was part of a band that hosted a "cutting" jam session. If a musician sucked, they were given unending solos and booed off the stage. Brutal, but true of some jam sessions.
A 17 year old kid showed up and asked if he could sit in. He was told how the jam worked and still wanted to play.
He did great. After his time on stage was done my friend said to him (roughly) , "Hey, kid, you're pretty good. What's your name?"
The reply: "Herbie. Herbie Hancock".
If you're not familiar with his work, this cut from one of his albums with Earth, Wind, and Fire providing the backup vocals is a great example
