  • Apple's Steve Jobs is Dead

Steven P. Jobs, the Apple Inc. chairman and co-founder who pioneered the personal computer industry and changed the way people think about technology, died Wednesday.

"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives," Apple said in a statement. "The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

His family, in a separate statement, said Mr. Jobs "died peacefully today surrounded by his family...We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief."

I recently purchased an iMac – and I agree with kc - the product is superior. I don’t know much about Steve Jobs, and frankly I don’t much care; but I do know this: The late Mr. Jobs stood for the model of the world that works.

        RIP

I know Apple was once a great innovator, but things have changed. iPhone is playing catch up with others at this point and Apple is not what it once was. My iPod is the only Apple product I own or have a desire to own but I have friends who love it all. Jobs was, at one time, a great innovator. His company is more or less using name recognition instead of innovation anymore and I hope that changes. I doubt I'll ever own anything more than my iPod, but having a couple of companies that push things farther while competing against each other is a good thing. Jobs had quite a struggle over the last decade with his health and I hope he found peace.

I think much of the innovation of the past decade is less in the hardware and more in the usability of the devices. The iPod wasn't the first mp3 player, and while it had some nice new touches for easier use, it really was iTunes that made it work. Those like me who are techheads have to remember that the majority of people don't care about who made the hardware or software, they just want it to work well enough and reliably enough to get the job done. If there are too many bells and whistles to wade through, and/or reliability is lower, the average joe will abandon, as they don't want to spend hours wrestling with a problem if they have another choice. The techhead response would be that "but it can't do x, y, and z" but the average joe may just not care about x, y and z. Average joe wants a, b, and c to work.

RIP Steve Jobs, and thank you for what you have done for our connected world.

I would be to differ. IPAD, IPHONE are all still the "standard". I know what some are disappointed with the IPHONE 4S announcement because there was not physical changes, but internal changes with IOS5 and enhancement with camera, processor, voice app, antenna, etc. - these are the things that matter.

                        SB or anyone else,

I'm one of the older farts around here and I’m not always thrilled to learn new technology… sometimes I feel lost in this rapidly changing technology world. However, I've decided to purchase the Iphone 4S when it’s available. Should I splurge immediately or hold off and let them get the bugs worked out first? I'm currently using a "Made in Mexico" Blackberry and I’m having lock-up problems several times per day and have to take the battery out for 30 seconds and re-boot. All of my immediate family loves their Apple products and I recently stepped up and purchased an IPad for myself... must admit I LOVE IT!
I’m confident I’ll enjoy the iPhone 4S and especially with the 8MP camera.

Any suggestions on when to purchase the Iphone 4S are much appreciated.

                        Thanks!

I've read a ton of things recently as I was looking for a new phone. The new iPhone is nice, but is hardly the standard as there are phones that have been on the market for months that are still more advanced than that one.

WstateU, the iPhone 4s is the iPhone 4 all the kinks worked out. However, the iPhone 5 is just around the corner.
