Payton said in his post-game press conference that he'd just ended a call with the league office in which the league office admitted that it was a blown call."
Has the crew correctly called the pass interference, the Saints would have been able to run the clock out.

The last I saw the game yesterday was decided by a 57 yd. field goal. Don't know what Payton's talking about.

You don't understand...
In spite of what was horrible no-call, they kicked a field goal that gave them the lead with a minute and half left. The Saints D then couldn't keep the Rams from scoring a game-tying field goal with 18 seconds left. The Saints won the coin toss for OT, and then the Saints O threw a pick with a chance to win the game on the line. The pick was thrown on the Rams side of the field. The Saints D then had a chance to stop the Rams from converting a first down, and they couldn't. This resulted in enough yardage for the Rams kicker to kick an improbable 57 yard field goal. Game over.
The Saints had several chances to win the game even after the horrible no-call, which happens every Sunday, in every NFL city, in every game. As a reference, just refer to several weeks ago when the Saints got several favorable, and questionable, calls in a game in which they clinched the right to play the Rams in the Big Easy for the conference championship. In other words, in NFL parlance, "these things have a way of evening out."

The call was awful. The Saints could’ve ran the clock down if that call stood and won it as time expired. Now the Saints did a real shitty job of fighting through adversity after that play and still had opportunities to win it, but the bottom line is that it is incomprehensible that a professional ref misses that call. One of worst whiffs I have ever seen.

Meh. The Saints were recipients of favorable pass interference calls to gain home field advantage weeks ago. If it wasn't for those calls they'd be playing L A in L A.
Again, "these things have a way of evening out over the course of a season." was never so true:
https://247sports.com/nfl/pittsburgh...oss-126812834/ Boo. Hoo.
57 yds. is the second longest field goal is NFL playoff history Shox. The longest is by none other than the chiefs' very own Stoyanovich (58 yds.). #3 is 55 yds. #4 is now 54 yds.
The stats reveal that the Rams outplayed 'em:
Total yds: Rams 378 / Saints 290
TOP: Rams, 32.36 / Saints 30.41
Passer Rating: Goff, 75.1 / Brees, 60.1
L A Rushing Yds: 77 Saints Rushing Yds: 48
L A Passing: 309 Saints Passing: 249
Should be a good Super Bowl. Truly a tough one to call.

Technically, Commissioner Goodell has the power to correct this although that isn't going to happen.
“Rule 17 Section 2 Article 3".
Upon further review, that part of the league rule book refers to “penalties for unfair acts.”
“The Commissioner’s powers under this Section 2 include the imposition of monetary fines and draft choice forfeitures, suspension of persons involved in unfair acts, and, if appropriate, the reversal of a game’s result or the rescheduling of a game, either from the beginning or from the point at which the extraordinary act occurred,” the rule says.
“In all cases, the Commissioner will conduct a full investigation, including the opportunity for hearings, use of game video, and any other procedure the Commissioner deems appropriate.”
Technically, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has the power to set back time, giving the Saints first and goal at the spot of the foul, put 1:49 back on the game clock, and let the game proceed, with the score tied, 20-20, with the Rams having one time out left.
In theory, however, such an “extraordinarily unfair” act is deemed to be related to something like a fan running onto the field and blocking a field goal attempt, but not a game official missing a call. Which makes it virtually impossible that the NFL will do anything as drastic as reversing the result of the NFC Championship Game.

That is interesting but exceedingly unlikely to be used here. That would open a real big can of worms. It's not like missed calls are uncommon. It is just that this one was so egregiously bad and incompetent and changed the outcome of a Conference Championship game.
I suspect we will see some rule changes and perhaps the official or officials who were responsible for not making this call may be taken to task.

From where I sat watching the game yesterday, that horrible no-call didn't deny the Saints and Brees a chance to win that game...
If it weren't for questionable PI calls 3 weeks ago, when the Saints clinched home field, the game would have been in L A. No?
Bad. Call/No Calls. Happen. All. The. Time. The Saints lost because Brees threw a pick in OT. But I see what you're saying. Heck, I wish they could have taken back those horrible PI calls one month ago.Last edited by ShockingButTrue; January 21, 2019, 08:03 PM.
