This was before my time and I know little about the details as of right now. I'll probably educate myself in the near future. But he's written a letter to FoxNews.com that's available in the link. 2 pages. He also references a website called ariseandshine.org that I'll be checking out. It's interesting to see what prison does to people. Sometimes it's good. Sometimes it's not.

Son of Sam went to places where people dating parked their cars for some time. Then he shot them. He did it because his dog told him he should do that.
He was one of the early identified serial killers and law enforcement wasn't prepared to deal with random killings. Early investigations concentrated on people associated with the victims, which was not productive in solving the crimes.
In current criminal justice, Son of Sam would be totally unfit for trial and placed in a mental institution.
Many long-term studies of people with the same types of mental disorders that Son of Sam had, indicate those disorders are permanent. The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Based on this story I went and read his personal testimony as well as numerous journal entries over the years. He is practically a pastor in the prison and projects a consistent, uncompromising faith in Christ. In his story he describes how he came to get involved in the occult and Satanism. That was added to the mental illness he had struggled with since childhood and it led to the killings. It wasn't until after roughly 10 years in prison that a fellow prisoner shared the gospel with him and he began to understand the severity and effects of his crimes.
I've read stories of prisoners who "found the Lord" and you can tell the depth of their commitment or understanding is shallow, if even sincere. I know a few ex-cons personally and some who do (or did) take their faith seriously always struggle with the things that got them in trouble to begin with (not necessarily violence, but mental/addiction issues).
But it looks to me as if Berkowitz gets it, his faith strong, and his understanding deep.

Might want to read about the parable of the workers in the vineyard in Matthew 20.
