Why do you say the books went downhill?

She changed styles midstream and the fourth book was just terrible relative to 1 and 2. 3 was "okay". I got so put off by the new style in the 4th book I never even finished it, yet I thoroughly enjoyed 1 and 2.

I think kids continued to read them only because of the enthusiasm over the first 3.

It's sorta like the Friday the 13th movies .. if you were super hooked on 1 you probably kept watching the rest of them no matter how terrible they were. But if you just kinda liked 1 and 2 then you quickly stopped watching from 3 on.
