  • DRAFT - KC Royals

The draft begins Monday and it can create a bit of clutter on the Royals thread with the other things going on so I thought I'd start another thread for it as I've come across the first little piece mentioning it.

Royals have knack when it comes to Draft
KANSAS CITY -- The Royals are on a roll. They can pick 'em.

Each of their first selections in the First-Year Player Draft from 2004 to 2009 is either a key player on their Major League roster or close to it.

Designated hitter Billy Butler (2004) and left fielder Alex Gordon (2005) are big parts of the offense. Luke Hochevar (2006) heads the pitching rotation and Aaron Crow (2009) has just been named closer. Eric Hosmer (2008) is a rising rookie at first base. Third baseman Mike Moustakas (2007) is expected to join the team sometime this summer.

It's too early to tell about the 2010 first choice, Christian Colon, who is playing shortstop at the Double-A level.

General manager Dayton Moore says it's also too early to tell which first-round pick ultimately will have the most impact on the Royals' future. Hosmer, though, is an example of a choice that paid off in a hurry.

From Pine Tar Press - My top 10 for the Kansas City Royals in the 2011 draft I admit that the kid from Gardner and the two HS OK kids are very attractive at 5. And also from PTP, 10 round mock draft: specific to Kansas City Royals by Aman Reaka. One Wichita State mention.

        :good:

The dude is an amazing athlete, got to see him play basketball three times this year at a mid season tournament and he is extremely fast, and his acceleration is astounding.

If Bubba is still around and the Royals think they can sign him they should go for it, the kid appears to be a freak talent. If he's gone or they don't think they can sign him, go for a pitcher.

KANSAS CITY, MO (June 6, 2011) — The Kansas City Royals have selected Bubba Starling, an outfielder from Gardner Edgerton (Kan.) High School, with the fifth overall pick of the June Free Agent Draft.

The 18-year-old Starling, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound centerfielder, was ranked by Baseball America as the number one high school prospect and the best high school athlete in the draft. The right-handed hitter and thrower batted .481 this spring for the Trailblazers, averaging a home run every six at bats, according the ESPN.com. In his junior and senior seasons combined, he hit better than .500 with 17 home runs. Starling played for Team USA (under 18 ) in the summer of 2010, hitting .339 with three home runs with 12 RBI, 20 runs scored, a .474 on-base pct. and .532 slugging pct. In addition to his time on Team USA, he also competed at the 2010 Tournament of Stars and the Under Armour Game.

Starling is a native of Gardner, Kan. In addition to his baseball accomplishments, Starling was the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year in football. As the Gardner Edgerton quarterback, he ran for 2,377 yards and 31 touchdowns as a senior and threw for an additional 790 yards and eight touchdowns in leading his club to the Kansas 5A state semifinals. Over his three-year high school football career, Starling accounted for more than 8,100 yards of offense and 97 touchdowns.

With the three college pitchers out of the way as well as Bundy, I wasn't the least bit surprised that we drafted Starling and am quite pleased.

The draft continues today starting at 11am I believe. I'll try to stay on it as much as I can from work.

The Royals selected Bubba Starling in the 2011 Draft
The real story here is that the Royals didn’t seem to draft for need or for immediate help. Maybe that was just the luck of the draw, but it does seem as if Dayton Moore is sticking to his Process. A process, which it seems isn’t about producing “waves” of talent. Waves of talent is a theory of hoping to win followed by expecting to lose. It’s a failed process. One that the Royals can’t afford to subscribe to. What they have shown with the selection of Starling is that they are going to load the system with talent and continue to pile it on. Dayton Moore isn’t trying to build a team, he’s trying to build a franchise. It’s the more difficult, but ultimately more successful endeavor.

The Gallagher pick is a head-scratcher. I watched a video of him. His swing looked slow to me and reports are he doesn't run well.
