Video of Tornado that hit Tuscaloose - close up and personal

This video is from the EF4 tornado that went through Tuscaloosa, AL on 4/27/11. It was taken from the University Mall parking lot. Probably the closest vid...

This outbreak might break the 1974 record in both tornadoes and causalities in 24 hour period.

According to reports from people there that I know, it broke both for one day in US.

Also, the Alabama campus suffered some damage. Video I've seen shoed a tornado within a mile of campus.

I believe the super outbreak of 1974 has the largest amount of tornadoes - 148. So far today there has been 138 reports so it will be close depending on what happens the rest of the night (and how many duplicates are in the total).

But some of the rumors of death toll are shocking if true.

From a guy I know in Madison Alabama tweeted

When they say, "U need 2 get in ur tornado shelter", what do they expect the other 99% of us 2 do? #hugthetoilet

Those 138 reports will shrink to probably 1/2 to 2/3 of the actual tornado totals for the day. It won't even be close to the Super Outbreak. One must consider that since these storms were such long-tracked that multiple reports of the same tornado were being made throughout the day. I'm thinking it shrinks to 70-90 total tornadoes when it's all said and done. Very impressive but not Super Outbreak material.

The death toll may be a different story.

That video SB posted is almost a carbon-copy of the Andover tornado. The horizontal vortices, motion, color, and size are almost identical. There's another video out there that also is a carbon-copy of Andover. There's no doubt about it that the Tuscaloosa storm is a violent tornado and I'll be shocked to find out if it isn't rated EF-5. Absolutely stunning videos coming out of that area.

Very nasty day for the mid-south.

              ... No really, deuces.

Yesterday will probably go down second to '74. The nastiest atmospheric setup I have ever seen other than '74, and I've done a lot of past outbreak research.

The similarities in the upper atmosphere were striking but they were totally different systems as a whole.

                  Death toll above 200 now.

The 1974 outbreak had a much larger warm sector, all the way up into southern Michigan, had we had that today, it could have been much much worse.

1974 also had winds in the mid levels of 140 KTS yesterday only around 105 KNTS, so even though this was probably the worst outbreak since then, it still will be second to April 3 1974

The tuscaloosa tornado looked very similar to the Andover one as well.

EDIT: i hadn't even read Fevers post until after this one, but he beat me too it.

Work is sending me to AL because of this. Just another day at the park in my line of work. And to think it is not even hurricane season yet.
