  • Storm Chasers Beat Up On I-Cubs
Des Moines, IA - Willy Lebron worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief and Omaha's offense continued to sizzle in a 15-5 decision over Iowa Friday night in the opener of the final four-game set of the regular season at Principal Park. The Storm Chasers collected 16 hits, drew nine walks and took advantage of three errors to improve their overall record to 79-61 and their record away from home to 39-29.

Irving Falu's solo home run in the first inning got the scoring started before the visitors added a trio of runs with two outs in the third. David Lough tripled and scored after an errant throw to third base prior to Manny Pina's two-run double that made it a 4-0 game.

Naturals close in on playoffs with win
For the first four innings, Travelers' starter and Texas League Pitcher of the Year Matt Shoemaker was not pitching a no-hitter, but was more efficient than Odorizzi and had the Naturals' offense contained. But in the fifth, Anthony Seratelli singled to leadoff the inning and swiped second base just under a tag. Wil Myers worked a very rare walk from the mustached Shoemaker, and then Mario Lisson bunted both runners over into scoring position.

Ben Theriot followed with a sacrifice fly deep enough to score Seratelli from third and advance Lisson as well. Lisson would end up scoring as well on the subsequent RBI single from Derrick Robinson. That would be it for Shoemaker (12-5), who was on an abbreviated pitch count as the Travelers prepare for him to start game one of the playoffs.
Santiago. Odorizzi takes no-hitter into seventh
After scuffling a bit in August, Jake Odorizzi took to the bullpen to make some alterations to his mechanics. On Friday, he reaped the rewards of that work.
The Royals' No. 2 prospect took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals defeated the Arkansas Travelers, 5-2.

Odorizzi ended up allowing just one hit over seven frames, striking out six and walking two.

"I thought it was good. I've been working on a lot of things in the bullpen," said Odorizzi, who had a 4.60 ERA in August. "I was losing my front side the past couple games, so I was trying to get back over the rubber, stay calm and explode off of it. I've been working on that, and tonight I put it into a game."

Selected by the Brewers with the 32nd overall pick of the 2008 Draft, Odorizzi was acquired by the Royals in the offseason as part of a four-player package for Zack Greinke. He started the year by going 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA for Class A Advanced Wilmington, then put together a 5-3 record with a 4.72 ERA for the Naturals.

The 21-year-old right-hander faced the minimum through five Friday -- Darwin Perez walked in the third but was caught stealing to end the inning -- before issuing a leadoff walk to Alberto Rosario in the sixth. The Travelers' first hit came in the seventh, when Gabe Jacobo roped a one-out single to right-center.

"It was the third time through the order, I went for a first-pitch curveball," Odorizzi said. "I was trying to get ahead and missed. I went fastball away and he hit it in the right-center gap. He took it where it was pitched. He hit it pretty well, no question it was going to be a hit. He earned it."

Kane County scores all nine runs in 6th inning
The Cougars sent 14 men to the plate and scored nine runs in the sixth inning. Yowill Espinal's RBI single scored two runs, giving Kane County a 2-1 lead. Geulin Beltre cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double, extending the lead to 5-1. Brian Fletcher's RBI single made the score 6-1. Juan Graterol's RBI single pushed the Cougars lead to 6-1. Espinal then drove home two more in the inning with another 2-RBI single.
Yordano Ventura (4-6) picked up the win for the Cougars. He went five innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out five and walking one.
    IDF loses 5-7.

    • Omaha lost the final two games of the season. They're off today and start postseason play at Round Rock tomorrow night. Mendoza will take the hill for game one.

Naturals belt Tulsa for second-half title!
The Naturals picked up their reliever in the top of the eighth with a pair of home runs, as Wil Myers led off the inning with a solo shot and Ben Theriot added another with one out. Derrick Robinson then walked, stole second and third and then scored when catcher Wilin Rosario's throw sailed into left field.

Leading 6-2 in the ninth, Tim Smith provided the team's third leadoff homer in as many innings when he took Adam Jorgensen deep to right. Lisson and Theriot then ripped back-to-back RBI doubles to cap the scoring.
NWA is off today and will begin post season play at Arkansas. Odorizzi will start game one.

Wilmington finished their season this weekend. BOTTOM OF THE ORDER CARRIES ROCKS TO VICTORY
Tyler Sample tied his season-high mark for strikeouts in an outing with seven. He last turned the trick the last time he also failed to allow an earned run in a 3-0 defeat of Myrtle Beach on July 10. The right-hander walked just two and allowed only a couple of hits over six innings for his third quality start among his last five nods.
MELVILLE LOOKS SHARP AS ROCKS WIN
Wilmington, DE - Tim Melville equaled the longest outing of his season by turning in seven frames of one-run ball as the Wilmington Blue Rocks clinched a win in their final series of 2011 courtesy of Sunday's 4-1 victory over the Frederick Keys.
Melville (11-10) was magnificent, as the right-hander struck out six and walked only two. He was perfect in his first and last frame of the day. In between the 14th-ranked prospect on the Kansas City farm according to Baseball America used a pair of double plays to help stifle the Frederick offense.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball Wilmington jumped out to an early lead with a single tally in the third and then padded that advantage with two more scores in the fourth.

Back-to-back two-out doubles by Whit Merrifield and Carlo Testa in the third got the Rocks on the board. Wilmington then used two more two-out knocks an inning later to increase its lead. With men at first and second, Joey Lewis tomahawked a liner to left that plated Ryan Stovall and made it, 2-0 Blue Crew. Deivy Batista then sent a seeing-eye single to left which plated Adrian Morales to put the Rocks up by three runs.
      ROCKS FINISH SEASON WITH SWEEP
Wilmington, DE - Justin Marks turned in his seventh consecutive strong start and the Wilmington offense got all the runs it needed in the third inning as the Blue Rocks beat the Frederick Keys, 3-0, on Monday at Frawley Stadium. The win completed a three-game sweep for the Rocks in their final series of the 2011 season.
Marks was masterful as the left-hander whiffed eight and walked only three in seven sterling innings. He set down the side in order three times, retired 12 consecutive hitters at one point and only faced two serious Frederick threats.
Justin Marks finished the season in style. The southpaw posted a 3-0 mark and a 2.03 ERA in his final seven starts of the year. He led all Carolina Leaguers with 140 strikeouts in 2011.
Kane County won Friday 9-1, lost Saturday 1-6, won Sunday 3-1 and lost yesterday 3-9. They've locked up a playoff spot though. Looks like they'll start with Burlington tomorrow evening.

IDF limps to the finish. But Brooks shows he can pitch one last time. Brooks and Bats Lead Chukras to 6-2 Win
Brooks (6-1) would earn the win after allowing just one run on three hits and eight strikeouts over his six innings pitched.
They have one more game against Ogden tonight and finish with two at Orem.

      • Royals make organizational roster moves for playoffs
c Travis Jones to Kane County
This one means nothing to me.
P Justin Marks and Ryan Dennick to NWA….Marks to serve as 5th SP
Marks has had a heck of a season and getting some playoff experience against AA hitters would be nice. He'll be on the staff next season and if he continues to pitch well could be seen in KC in '13 or '14.
Jeremy Jeffress activated and Will Smith sent to Arizona (Surprise) his season appears done, don’t know why
Jeffress has pretty much sucked this season. He's had a few flashes, but mostly it's been ugly. Why they're sending Smith to Arizona is confusing. He's been one of the more productive pitchers for NWA and would be a valuable asset in a playoff run. Injury?
Whit Merrifield to Omaha to provide depth with Navarro going to MLB and NWA in playoffs
Interesting that this is the 2nd player from Wilmington that's been sent to Omaha for depth. Whit was a 9th Round pick in '10 and has had a pretty good year at Wilmington.

            • Mendoza leads Omaha in PCL opener
Making his most pressure-packed start of the year, Luis Mendoza got some relief before he even stepped on the mound.
Spotted a 3-0 lead prior to throwing his first pitch, Mendoza tossed seven strong innings in Game 1 of the Pacific Coast League playoffs Wednesday to lead Triple-A Omaha to a 4-0 victory over Round Rock
Billo, Cougars blank Bees in Game 1
Greg Billo was coming off the most successful season of his four-year career. Unfazed by the pressure of meaningful September baseball, he continued to dominate in his playoff debut.
The Royals prospect allowed three hits and a walk while striking out seven over seven innings Wednesday as the Kane County Cougars blanked the Burlington Bees, 4-0, in Game 1 of their Midwest League first-round series.
Travs take tight game one in extras
Naturals' starter Chris Dwyer was nearly as efficient although he pitched just six frames, allowing two hits and three walks and the one unearned run. He also struckout seven.

                • Timely Plays Go Chasers' Way in Game 2 Win
In the top of the second, Kila Ka'aihue's leadoff single was followed by a bunt base hit by Irving Falu and an infield single by Joaquin Arias, loading the bases with nobody out. Manny Pina coaxed an eight-pitch walk to put the Chasers on the board, and Kurt Mertins and Jarrod Dyson followed with a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring sacrifice bunt, respectively, making it 3-0.

Round Rock would snap its 10-inning scoreless streak in the bottom of the second against starting and winning pitcher Vin Mazzaro (1-0). After Mazzaro retired the first four hitters of the game in order, he walked Joey Butler and allowed a first-pitch, two-run homer to Val Majewski to give the Express what turned out to be their only two runs of the night.

Any thoughts that Mazzaro would unravel were quickly erased, as the 24-year-old right-hander got out of the inning and went on to record 15 consecutive outs, taking a one-hitter into the seventh.

Pina continued his excellent night at the plate with an RBI single in the sixth, giving the Chasers a bit of breathing room at 4-2, but the game's critical play would come an inning later in the bottom of the seventh.
Monty starts game 3. Omaha is up 2-0

Travs top Naturals on Lopez walk-off
For the second straight night, each team's starting pitcher excelled under the increased pressure of a playoff situation. Jake Odorizzi and Christian Scholl allowed just three hits in 14 combined scoreless innings, and neither team had more than one runner reach second base until Lopez' game-ending blast.

Making a second consecutive start against the Travelers, Odorizzi retired the first four batters he faced before Lopez' one-out single in the second. The 21-year-old right-hander immediately induced an inning-ending double play and did not allow another hit.

Odorizzi did not have perfect control - walking three - and committed a fielding error, but managed to work himself out of trouble on every occasion. After recording just one strikeout in the first five innings, Odorizzi fanned the first two batters of the sixth, his final frame.
Santiago takes the hill for game 3. NWA trails 0-2.

KC fell 1-5 and are now tied at 1's in the best of 3 series.

                    • Playoff weekend on the farm!

                      Chasers Crippled by 11th-Inning Errors
The Chasers tried their best to rally in the bottom of the inning, getting base hits by David Lough, Lorenzo Cain and Clint Robinson to make it a 9-7 game and get the tying run on base with none out. But Lance Zawadzki popped up, Irving Falu hit a harmless sacrifice fly and Arias went down swinging against Cody Eppley (1-0), finishing the ballgame.

Though it was the errors and game-ending strikeout that ultimately decided the fate of the Storm Chasers, they could have packed it in long before they brought the potential game-winning run to the plate
Ka'aihue Powers Chasers into Championship Series
OMAHA, Neb. - Kila Ka'aihue has been a man of few words this season, so it was no surprise that with the Chasers on the brink of a playoff series victory, he let his bat do the talking. Ka'aihue's 316-foot drive down the right-field line had just enough juice to hit the foul pole, giving the Storm Chasers a dramatic 4-2 series-winning victory over the Round Rock Express in 10 innings Saturday afternoon at Werner Park.

Long before the Chasers celebrated their win, the hero of the day was Omaha right-hander Sean O'Sullivan. Tasked with holding back the potent Express offense, O'Sullivan carried a perfect game into the seventh inning and a no-hitter into the eighth, with the Chasers clinging to a 2-0 lead.

However, with just six outs to go, disaster struck. Joey Butler hit a grounder directly at second baseman Kurt Mertins, who was unable to field it and was charged with an error. No-hitter still intact, O'Sullivan then served up a mammoth two-run home run to Luis Cruz, knotting the game at 2-2 and giving Round Rock its first hit of the day.
Championship Series against Sacramento begins tomorrow night in Omaha. Pitcher TBD

I know NWA won game three but the article I cannot find. For some reason, they decided to start Jeffress for game four and the results are pretty much what I would have expected...Travs win, bounce Naturals from playoffs
The series will be remembered somewhat for the absence of Naturals' Pitcher of the Year Will Smith, who led the league in both wins and innings pitched. Smith was shut down at the behest of the Royals and the Naturals had to work without one of their most reliable arms down the stretch. As it was, should the Naturals had forced a game five, they'd have turned the ball over to southpaw Justin Marks, another pitcher who would have been making his Double-A debut.
I would have prefered that they started Marks or Pimentel in game 4 and the other in 5. Still no clue why Smith was shut down. He's had a great year for NWA. Jeffress continues to get worse. This experiment with him as a starter has been pretty horrid.

Cougars knock Bees out in first round
Adam (1-0) yielded three hits over five scoreless innings before his defense buckled him in the sixth. He fanned five.

"I went in there with the mind-set of using the adrenaline to my advantage," he said. "I zeroed in on the next pitch, the next pitch. I felt pretty confident in all my stuff."

Jose Crisotomo doubled with one out and scored when A. J. Kirby-Jones reached on third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert's two-out error. A second miscue on the same play, catcher Kevin David's throwing error, allowed Kirby-Jones to score.

"[Kirby-Jones] skied a pop fly," said Adam, a 2010 fifth-round Draft pick who was 6-9 with a 4.23 ERA in 21 regular-season starts. "I imagine it was a tough catch, late at night like that."
Quad Cities sweeps Kane County to reach MWL League Finals
Entering the eighth inning, the River Bandits were behind, 5-0, but they plated two runs on Colin Walsh's RBI double and a passed ball. In the ninth, Ronny Gil walked and Jonathan Rodriguez and Cody Stanley followed with consecutive singles to bring Longmire to the plate.

"When we were behind early, I knew we had a chance to come back and win," he explained. "When it's the eighth or ninth inning and you're down by five runs it's hard, but the belief was still there. Once we got the momentum, I knew we had a shot."
Kane County's Jason Mitchell struck out nine batters over eight solid innings. He allowed two runs -- one earned -- on four hits but did not factor in the decision.
                      KC lost game one 0-7.

Cain finished the night 3-for-4 with a triple, bringing his average in five playoff games up to .522. Traded to the Royals in the offseason deal that sent Zack Greinke to Milwaukee, the 25-year-old outfielder batted .312 with 16 homers, 81 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in 128 regular-season contests.

"I was just trying to stay locked in," Cain said. "The playoffs are a different atmosphere, so your focus is very high. The adrenaline's pumping. I stayed with my approach -- a line-drive hitter -- and I was able to have a good night tonight."

PCL Pitcher of the Year Luis Mendoza (2-0) also played a ke role in the win, allowing two runs on three hits over seven innings. After going 12-5 with a league-leading 2.18 ERA during the regular season, he's put together a 1.29 ERA over 14 innings in the playoffs.

                            • Storm Chasers power on in PCL Finals
Jarrod Dyson had been struggling in the playoffs, going just 2-for-22 in five games. Tell that to the Sacramento River Cats.

The Storm Chasers outfielder went 4-for-6 with a homer, a double, four RBIs and three runs scored, falling a triple shy of the cycle as Omaha blew out Sacramento, 15-4, to take a 2-0 series lead in the Pacific Coast League Championship Series.

I've been struggling the whole [playoffs], and I just tried to stay as short as possible [to the ball] and not try to get too big," said Dyson, who hit .279 with 38 steals in 40 attempts this season. "Play my game and get on base, because if I get on base, I'm gonna create havoc. I think I pressured myself to get on and that's why I was struggling."
