Shocks hung in with SMU, who had a big size advantage, in the Bahamas this afternoon but fell by a score of 67-60.

The Shocks were called for a foul with 0.8 of a second left to stretch out the margin a little bit. Shocks had cut the lead to 63-60 with 25 seconds left but 4 late free throws provided SMU with the final 7-point margin. Not a bad effort by the young Shocks.

Morgan Boyd with 26 points had a very good game for the Shocks. Hopefully this will be a breakout game for Morgan. If we can get her going it would improve the Shocks chances of a morec successful MVC season greatly.

Shocks take on UMKC this afternoon in Game 2 of the Bahamas Sunplash Shootout.

UMKC lost 65-69 to Indiana State (9-1) yesterday. UMKC also owns a 2-point win over Drake in Kansas City. Drake was picked 3rd and INS was picked 5th in MVC pre-season poll.

Indiana State plays SMU today.

UMKC will not have a size advantage over the Shocks (unlike what the Shocks faced against SMU) but they did outrebound INS which is the 1st time this year that INS has been out-rebounded.

If nothing else this tournament may give us a little better feel how the Shocks may be able to compete in the MVC.

Not a good 1st half after a promising start.

Shocks were up by 7 early at 16-9, although neither team was playing well. UMKC outscored the Shocks by 22 - 3 over the remainder of the half helped greatly by 17 fouls on the Shocks. That was further complicated by poor shooting (27% including 3 of their last 18 and only 1 of 13 from behind the arc), high turnovers (13 vs 2 assists) and they were outrebounded (18-22).

Apparently, the Shocks had great difficulty with UMKC's zone.

Maybe the Shocks poorest half of the year.

Shocks win 53-52 with a great second half come back effort. In fact, two come backs.

The Shocks took their 1st lead of the half at about the 6 minute mark at 44-42 on a jumper by Jessie Diamond.

The strecthed that lead to 48-44 and had three possessions to add to that but could not.

A 3 by UMKC with about 30 seconds left cut the lead to 51-50. The Shocks then failed to inbound the ball within the alotted 5 seconds.

2 FT's by UMKC gave the Roos a 52-51 lead with 23 seconds remaining.

The Shocks called a timeout with 9 seconds left and then worked a play to Jazimen Gordon off of penetration buy Marisah for the game winner with 1 second on the clock.

Not a pretty win, but a win nonetheless. The Shocks responded well to HCJA halftime challenge. Apparently, Shocks played a lot of zone themselves the 2nd half as they outscored UMKC 34-21 in the half.

On the whole I would call this a nice showing for a young team. We were competitive in both games and do enough to come out with a win in one of them.

As was noted before, these two games should give us some idea of how we will fair in the MVC. We will rely on getting most of our Valley wins at home this year, but a good neutral site showing is a good sign that we might be able to be competitive enough away from Koch to grab a win or two on the road.

Yes, Wichita South grad I believe. I think I mentioned in another thread that she would be looking really good in Shocker Black and Gold about now.

Hopefully, we can add some local flavor in the future, although from what I hear the local D-1 talent pool is pretty shallow right now (at least witth the class of 2010). Hopefully, by the time the next up cycle in local talent is here WSU will be a more respected program.

Shocks did not shoot the ball well today at 32.8% for the game including an ice cold 2-20 on 3-pointers.

Shocks did come back to dominate the boards in the 2nd half. They ended up outrebounding UMKC 45-31 for the game, which means they held a 27-9 rebounding advantage in the second half.

They also cut the fouls from 17 in the first half to 7 in the second half.

I could not tell what kind of shot Jazimen made from Brian's PBP, but according to the write-up on goShockers.com it was an open 12 footer.

Another item of interest is that Haleigh sat out the final 10:30 of the game. The Shocks trailed 33-39 when she departed. She had a poor shooting game. Not sure what the story was otherwise.

BTW, SMU defeated Indiana State by a 69-54 score.
