Wanted to let Shocker Fans know about a new event at WSU:
Shocker Sprints
Indoor Rowing Race
February 14, 2009
Heskett Center
Morning: 2000 meter racing
Cost: $12.00
Afternoon: 500 meter racing
Cost: FREE
Any one can race! Compete for your WSU organization, as an individual or just come and watch the excitement!
The race takes place on rowing machines, also known as ergs.
Race participants row 2000 meters, the standard distance of the Olympic rowing events or in a 500 meter event. “Anyone can get on a machine and race for 500 meters or about 2 minutes. We’re hoping to attract fitness buffs who want to test their health in a different arena or WSU students and staff who want to try something different.” says Tori Breithaupt, Shocker Sprint coordinator. “We’ve created the 500 meter events with WSU in mind: it’s free to participate, winners will have their names hung on a plaque at the Heskett Center and we have many categories so there’s an opportunity for all to race.”
Not only is the race open to anyone to participate in, indoor racing is a fun event to watch. Spectators see the race from start to finish. The second by second results are electronically posted on a large screen – each racer’s progress is plotted with 2nd to the last place racers’ distances behind the leader posted.
Participants also have this up to the second information on the monitor attached to their own ergs.
To participate, go online and fill out the form(s) at Wichita.edu/rowing by 2/12. Participants in the 2000 meter event, must pay the $12 entrance fee at the Heskett front desk. If racing the 500 meter event, just sign-up, it’s free!
