  • Lady Shocks Final Home Stand

Good effort by the Lady Shocks tonight losing in a close game to 3rd place Creighton 56-53.

A huge improvement over the 36 point drubbing CU put on the Shocks in Omaha.

Looks like the Lady Shocks may have recieved a similar fate to that of the Shocker Men tonight in St. Louis.

CU was 16-28 from the line vs 6-11 for the Shocks.

Kiki with 23 points and 9 rebounds.

Jacie with one of her better floor games with 9 assists and only 3 turnovers.

Still hard to win games when you only put up 53 points, especially at home.

1972-- I agree with your assessment overall. There seems to be a theme going with opponents making more free throws than the Shockers even attempt. When you only need an additional 4 points to win the game, having the other team outscore you by 10 at the line really hurts.
What a great defensive effort by the Shockers, too. They held the Jays to 32.7% from the field. This is down from their average of 40.8% per game.

I also would point out Alex Bunton's 11 rebounds in 21 minutes. Great effort by the senior from Goddard. She played a big role in the overall rebounding effort by the Shockers in which they outrebounded Creighton 48-38. And Creighton is known to be a good rebounding team themselves, as they came into the game outrebounding opponents by an average margin of 5 per game.

Reviewed the Valley team statistics tonight. As would be expected, Shockers rank low in most offensive categories. They rank well in several defensive and rebounding categories, however. (A) FG % defense--#1 (B) 3 pt FG% defense--#2 (C) Offensive rebounds--#3 (D) Defensive rebounds--#3 (E) Blocked shots--#1...Alex Bunton is one of the top shot blockers in this league, despite <12 minutes per game playing time. We will miss her presence on the inside.

Another Valley team comparison stat that was a pleasant surprise was the average home attendance stat...WSU still ranks #4 in the league despite having more Valley losses than any other team.

I've heard it said that winning programs are built on strong defense and rebounding....(but that a strong offense sure helps). It seems that WSU has built that foundation.......Now for some offense to go on top of the foundation! :goshocks:

Perhaps the most bottom-line stat on the defensive side is scoring defense.

In conference games only the Shockers are #8 in the league in scoring defense allowing 70.3 PPG. SIU is at 70.5 and INS at 70.9

Sometime this stat is misleading. If you are a high scoring, high possession style of team you tend to both score more and give up more points. However, I don't think that is the case with this year's Shocker team as they are also scoring offense. Not a good combination.

In conference scoring margin the Shockers have the #10 spot by a wide margin at -15.2 PPG. Bradley is 9th at -6.1.

Unfortunately, the competitive game with CU last night was more the exception, then the rule for this year's Shocker team.

I was not at the CU game so it is hard to say whether we played good defense last night or if CU simply shot badly. My guess is a combination of the two, but I will defer to those who attended the game to make that judgement.

Interestingly, all of the MVC games were very competitive last night.

In addition, to the Shocks giving Creighton a run the other 3 games were all 3 to 5 point games.

The big upset was SIU's 72-69 win over Illinois State in Normal, knocking the Redbirds into second place and sealing a sole 10th place finish for the Shocks.

Indiana State upset Evansville 66 - 61 in Terre Haute.

Drake had to battle to sneak by Missouri State 61-58 in Springfield.

Shocks have their final game of the regular season Satruday against Drake.

How come the paper shows the Lady Shocks playing Creighton tomorrow afternoon at 1 pm (Saturday) at the Chuck?

Shocks with a heartbreaking loss to 2nd Place Drake this afternoon by a 53-51 score.

Shocks led throughout the 2nd half and led by as much as 8 at around the 11:00 mark and still led by 6 withunder 5:00 minutes to play but could not hold off the Bulldogs.

Shocks shut everyone down on the Drake team except Jill Martin. Martin had 22 in the first half. The Shocks then shut her down as she went scoreless until the final 5:00 minutes of the game. Lindsey Whorton was also only 2-15 at that point. In the last 5 minutes Whorton hit two treys and Martin chipped in 5 more points to lead Drake on an 11-3 run to close out the game and overcome the Shocks.

Shocks had a few shots at tying the game but could not get a shot to fall.

Martin finished with 27 accounting for over half of Drake's points.

Shocks close out a tough season at 9-21 (3-15 in the MVC).

Nice effort given by all the Shocks, but especially by the four Seniors, Kiki, Kyrie, Taylor and Alex.

Whitney Rice did not play in either game this week as she is still not recovered from the concussion she received in the Missouri State game.

                  Tie-Breaker fans will like this.

With Drake's narrow escape vs the Shockers today and with Illinois State defeating Evansville by an 87-72 score, there is now a 3-way tie for 1st place at 13-5 betweeem these 3 teams.

In addition, Creighton which also narrowly escaped with a win over the Shockers on Thursday can join the logjam at the top if they win tonight at Missouri State.

If CU defeats MSU and if Bradley defeats UNI tonight there will be a 4-way tie for 1st and a three way tie between MSU, UNI and INS at 8-10 for 5th place.

At least we don't have to worry what place the Shox will end up in.

Missouri State knocked of Creighton tonight and Bradley upended UNI.

Indiana State and Northern Iowa finished in a 6th place tie at 8-10.

I believe the tiebreaker goes to Indiana State by virtue of the better record against 5th place Missouri State.

Therefore, looks like the Shockers will get UNI in the 1st round of the MVC Tournament.

If the Shocks don't find some offense their stay in St. Charles will be short-lived. They have averaged 54 points over the last 8 games with a high output of 57.

They have a chance to win the game agaisnt UNI, but based on their performance on the road and nuetral sites this year, any win they get would be an upset.

If they do win, they will have one of the three tri-champions waiting for them. So the end would appear to be near.
