After 3, still tied 0-0. Ashly Bright struck out the side and still has a no hitter going.

    Wichita State 0 2 0
    Stanford 0 0 0

Shockers now 5 and 4 after second place finish at Stanford. They look like a winner to me.
First a Baseball fan then a Volleyball fan and then I guess I follow the basketball team.

A big improvement on the 11-0, 5-inning bashing the #13/14 ranked Cardinal put on the Shocks on Friday.

Cynthia Verhulst started the game on Friday and has taken two of the Shocker losses this year. The 11-0 loss to Stanford and the 9-3 loss last weekend to Chattanooga. She has an ERA of 15.75

Senior Ashley Bright went the distance in today's 2-0 loss to Stanford in which the Shockers actually outhit the Cardinal 3-2. Ashley is now 3-2 with a team leading ERA of 1.86 against pretty solid to very good competition. Her worst outing was a 5-4 loss to Kentucky.

Freshman Brianna Smet is 2-0 with an ERA of 2.39 with wins over Kentucky in relief of Bright and a shutout over Santa Clara. She also pitched in relief of Verhulst in the Stanford game.

As you all know, in fast-pitch softball, you will go as far as your pitching will carry you. Bright and Smet are off to pretty solid starts and looks like they will shoulder the load this year.

Senior Verhulst has been pretty shaky and may have pitched herself out of the rotation. Cynthia has now given up 67 earned runs in 52.2 innings in her Shocker career for an 8.91 ERA (55 earned runs in 38 innings over the last 3 years for a 10.13 ERA).

Last year Bright and Margo Pruis pitched 85.6% of the innings for the Shocks with Britnee Barnnet pitching 58 innings with a so-so 3.86 era and Vehulst pitching 6.2 innings in which she gave up 14 Earned Runs.

Look for Ashely Bright and Brianna Smet to pitch the bulk of the innings this year. I assume Senior Britnee Barnett is available for mop up duty here and there as needed. Verhulst just doesn't seem to have the stuff to be effective at the D-1 level.

Cynthia was second among the 2007 regulars in BA and led the team with 15 home runs. She needs to concentrate on what she can do for the team offensively and with her power without having to worry about pitching duties.

Next up for the Shocks is another tough tournament on the road at New Mexico in Albuquerque. Shocks will face Missouri, Washington and Texas Tech once each and New Mexico twice.

That is followed by another tough 4-team round robin at the Unviersity of Texas who will be hosting the Shocks, Wisconsin and Utah.

The Shocks will finally open up at home on March 5th with a mid-week game against traditional softball power Oklahome State.

Credit to Coach Pooch. He is not afraid to challenge his team and this schedule should definitely prepare them for the MVC season.
