  • Shocker SB at Bearkat (Sam Houston State) Softball Classic

The Shockers continue their 2018 season this Friday at the Bearkat Softball Classic hosted by Sam Houston State.

The Shocks play #4 Washington at 230pm on Friday and host Sam Houston State later that evening with a 700pm scheduled start time.

The opponents Saturday are Northern Colorado at 1000am immediately followed by a game against Seton Hall.

The Shockers close out their tournament with another game against #4 Washington at 1000am on Sunday.

Washington is a member of the Pac-12 where they are the preseason pick for third of the nine schools playing softball (no USC, Colorado or Washington State). Pitcher Taran Alvelo and infielder Taylor Van Zee are on the Player of the Year watch list. Sophomore infielder Sis Bates is a member of the USA National Team.

The Huskies won five games at a tournament hosted by Bradley this past weekend with the total runs being 70-3, the last four games being shutouts. They scored double digits in each game and had six players hit .500 or better. Kirstyn Thomas had five home runs in the tournament. It was a soft tournament, but still.

The Bearkats are picked to finish seventh of the twelve teams in the Southland Conference. Junior pitcher Lindsey McLeod is a member of the Preseason All-Conference second team. Tiffany Thompson and Megan Crosby are the returning power hitters.

SHS opened their season by going 1-3 at a tournament hosted by RV26 Texas State, with two of those losses in the late innings. Darby Fitzpatrick appears to be a second pitcher.

Northern Colorado are members of the Big Sky Conference where they tied for the last place pick among the eight teams. Jordyn Wiatrak was a second team All-Big Sky selection last year and led the team in home runs. Almost two-thirds of the Bears’ innings from last year (in the form of one person) graduated.

UNC was 3-2 in a tournament hosted by Loyola and played at The Dome (so no weather issues). Five different pitchers saw action with Valeri Vidal getting over half of the innings. Wiatrak was their leading hitter at .429 with two others close behind. The coach may not have learned much about his team at this tournament.

The Pirates of Seton Hall are picked sixth of eight teams playing softball in the Big East. Third baseman Alexis Walkden was the Big East Player of the Year last year.

SHU was 3-1 in a tournament hosted by UTSA. Like Sam Houston State, they lost a game to weather on Sunday. In addition to Walkden, Hailey Arteaga had a good weekend at the plate. Reganne Camp pitched half of their innings.

The Shockers are a preseason pick for fifth of the eight teams playing softball in the AAC. Third baseman Mackenzie Wright is a returning first-teamer from the Valley, while shortstop Laurie Derrico and catcher Madison Perrigan were second team honorees.

I know it’s early, but both Caitlin and BaileyK had a WHIP of 2.0 or greater while BaileyL was at 1.16. Bailee and Paige led the offense during the past weekend.

After Washington, this does not appear to be a particularly challenging tournament, but when you only have one pitcher (to this point), any tournament may prove to be challenging.

This will be quite a challenge in Caitlyn's very youn career.

Asia Webber in CF, Morgan Palmer in LF and Bailey Lange in RF with Paige Luellen at DH. Infield looks like the status quo.

Washington's Taran Alvelo is 3-0 on the seaason with a 0.00 ERA in 14 innings.

Mackenzie leads off the first with an infield single and is moved to second with a sac bunt by BaileyL. But Alvelo strikes out Madison and Paige.

The first 6 batters in the Washington lineup have averages of .562, .684, .737, .533, .429 and .500. Have they been playing slow-ptich?

In the bottom of the first, a leadoff double, ground out and throw to the plate on another ground ball gets an out in a rundown. But the Huskies follow with a two-run blast to center.

            Huskies lead 2-0 after one.

The Shockers threaten in the second. Ryleigh singles and then steals second with two outs. After Asea walks, they both advance on a wild pitch, and Morgan walks (on four pitches, intentional?) to load the bases. Alvelo then fans Mackenzie, the third strikeout of the inning for Alvelo. A sac bunt is the only non-K out among the six outs for the Shocks.

Washington has a leadoff hit-batter and a stolen base. With two outs, Caitlin issues a walk. A single and error by Asea in center scores two runs. Another single scores a third run before a ground out ends the inning.

Huskies lead 5-0 after two innings.

Madison squeezes in a walk among three more strikeouts, one of those being Bethany pinch-hitting for Paige, in the Shocker third.

In the bottom of the third, a single, wild pitch and walk brings on Hailey Martinez in relief of Caitlin for her Shocker debut. She is greeted by a two-run double. A caught-stealing helps her out of the inning, although she gives up a walk later.

                Washington leads 7-0 after three.

Asea flies out to end the Shocker fourth, ending a string of ten outs by strikeout by Alvelo.

BaileyK is in the circle to start the bottom of the fourth. Although she gives up a leadoff double, the Huskies do not score.

                  Still 7-0 after four.

Yea!! Another non-strikeout, a flyout by BaileyL.

BaileyK has two strikeouts of her own before giving up two singles and an infield hit to score a run and end the game by the runs-ahead rule.

Laurie has a two-out double in the first for the only Shocker baserunner in the first two innings.

SHS gets a walk in the first.

                        No score after two innings.

The Shocks open the third with a double by Bailee and a sac bunt, but cannot push a run across.

BaileyL has another three-up, three-down inning. She has retired nine in a row after giving up a game-opening walk.

Three innings and nary a run.

The Bearkats get a one-out double, their first hit of the game, but do not score.
