Thought I read this but Texas can only seat 4,000 people. We could have easily had more then that at our place.
Gregory Gymnasium seats 4400 - Texas had 4324 when they hosted Nebraska in mid-November. Gregory is the original basketball arena that has been converted for volleyball.
And back in the day, you registered in Gregory Gymnasium - long lines in a hot gym pulling IBM punch cards. :)
Wouldn't Texas feel a little screwed in this situation too? They are the #3 national seed and they get nationally ranked #9, 29-1, WSU coming to their place. I'm not sure how much it has to do with us getting screwed as it does that the Volleyball tourney is poorly planned a run. Volleyball is a minor sport when compared to Football and Basketball, I'm guessing they don't put a lot of effort into their pairings, seedings and host sites.
This whole thing is mind boggling to me as well. But I'm a little surprised that coach is taking it so well. I would think he would be absolutely blowing a gasket.
By the way, was it two or three years ago that we were like 25 - 3, ranked in the top 25, and didn't even get invited?

That was 2005 when the shocks were 28-3 including 18-0 in the MVC and were snubbed.
I think Lambo takes it well because he understands how the systems works and that their is not much he can do about it other than to keep building his program and interest in the sport and hopes others do the same.
On a positive note the MVC has placed 7 teams in the Tournament the past two years.
Right now Volleyball is a Tier 3 sport according to Lambo, so until the interest and revenue (meaning TV) are significant then things are not going to change much.
The best thing that could happen to the Shockers at this point would be to win the Texas sub-regional, a tall task indeed, but not an impossible one.
I think Marty has a point here. If I were Texas, I wouldn't have liked seeing WSU pop up in their regional either. The #3 team gets the #9, but some others didn't come close to getting anyone?
Everyone is right, it is a joke. I didn't look at the bracket, but my guess is that the Big 10 got jobbed too? Volleyball is strictly a Big 12 and West coast sport. With the occasional SEC team thrown in there.
Lambo was on the game plan today. He seemed in great spirits. The team is looking forward to the regional and he remarked how tough and focused practice has been.
This is what they play the entire season for....his best friend in coaching is the UT coach so Chris is very excited about the trip.
Just got a little tape on RIce, says they are very fast, that they do things in a hurry but sometimes that affects their ability to attack.
He remarked that not that long ago the NCAA only seeded 2 teams, now at least it's up to 16. He really razzed Terrell which was exceedingly humorous.
He was great...seemed focused on the goal, realistic about what is in front of him and excited about the challenge.
Chris Allison commented near the end that they had found a fill in to do the show the next time he takes vacation. Lambo said "I'm in" and "I even told Kennedy I'm going to do some baseball games with him this spring".
Here, here Coach. I sincerely wish you are still here in the spring (and beyond) to make that happen.
I'm not a big volleyball buff, but what's Dayton's attendance numbers? Are they really that good to generate a host?
Problem is you all are looking at these host sites wrong. The NCAA is not about promoting any fairness and finding true champions, but they are into 1 thing: $$$$$$$$$$$$$
The NCAA has already been signaling (e.g. winter baseball meetings) that they are going to choose host sites in sports on the basis of maximizing their profits, not on whether a team deserves it. That means choosing host sites where it cheapest to fly into and to try and maximize more regional matchups.
With Volleyball, they don't care about attendance because in the big scheme of things it very low on their list of important things - it the travel expenses. I expect ticket prices for wichita was probably a big discriminator against them.

Wait, you're saying the 7 or 8,000 a match that WSU would likely draw isn't a $$$ factor compared to the 500 that'll show up in Dayton? I think that would cover the airline ticket prices just fine. And really, how do you know Dayton is a cheap flight in? They aren't some major hub either. WSU and KSU would be half the schools in the pod. Only 2 other teams to worry about with regard to airline tickets. It's the same way with a lot of the pods.
NCAA Volleyball is just simply a joke at the administrative level. They should have just came out and said that an undefeated season wouldn't have been good enough to host and neither were your 3,000 fans a game.
Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

This might actually be a good thing for the Shocks...They are undefeted on the road and at neutral sites. Their only loss came at home. Best stay away from the place that gave you your loss. :D

Your making a ASSumption that WSU was competing against Dayton. I very much doubt they were. If you look at the field and hosts, you can see they were trying to cut travel down by air as much as possible.
And really, how do you know Dayton is a cheap flight in?
Well since they are pretty much a subard of Cincinnati its probably a no-brainer that flying into Dayton area is cheaper. But that is just a straw-man argument any way. They chose Dayton because for location relative to the other participants.
The NCAA has a memo out there where they say:
Originally posted by NCAA Memo on Travel
Newspapers and television seem to have daily reports on rising airfares and surcharges, while the airlines are reducing the number of flights and seats available.
A majority of invitations to participate in postseason NCAA Championships are awarded within seven days or less of the NCAA Championship happening. Because many sports have large travel parties, and because travel arrangements for NCAA Championships are made at the last minute, more prudent travel cost management must happen.
The NCAA has conducted a comprehensive Travel Cost/Capacity study and made several recommendations to the legislative bodies of the NCAA membership.
Among the recommendations the NCAA staff has offered are:
Announcement selection timing and departure from campus for the team, adjusting practice sessions to accommodate travel, avoiding cities with high travel costs, and further adjusting brackets to encourage less flying to championships.
They are also considering adjusting bracketing to place regional sites more geographically regardless of seeding, and in some sports eliminating the rule which attempted to avoid conference match-ups early in the bracket.
The NCAA is also recommending an amendment to their policy on reimbursement for extra bags and equipment. They project a possible $1.5 million expense in baggage surcharges. The NCAA is also exploring options to ground ship some equipment for participants.
During the 2007-08 athletic season, the NCAA spent $42.6 million in travel expenses relating to NCAA Championships in all three divisions. It was a 52.6 percent increase in its travel expenses over the past three years.
Last year in Division I, the NCAA spent nearly $29 million in travel expenses for the championships, which was an increase of 58 percent over the last three years.
They should have just came out and said that an undefeated season wouldn't have been good enough to host and neither were your 3,000 fans a game.
