This was my first volleyball match I have ever attended and you all are correct it was very exciting and my family and I had a great time (other than the outcome). Plan on trying to make it to more.

Thanks for the report sekshocker. You might want to mark your calendar for the UNI match on September 15. They are the preseason pick to win the MVC and have a long tradition of outstanding VB, including an all-time, any sport MVC record winning streak of 70 consecutive MVC matches.

Hope you can make many more matches.

Question: Was the level of athleticism and skill about what you expected or did it exceed or fall short of your expectations?

I would say it far exceeded my level of expectation. The speed at which the game is played the leaping ability, the fact that they can even dig or get a hand on some of those spikes and the velocity at which the ball travels was really eye opening. My wife had played a little in high school and she was just blown away with the athleticism and speed of the game.

Quick question and I hate to sound like an idiot, but:

Why does the one girl wear a different colored shirt then all the others?

This is a question every first-timer will probably ask. It is not a dumb question at all.

This is for a position called the Libero. I believe this started in Europe and was intergrated into College VB within the last decade.

The Libero is essentially a defensive specialist that usually is a small, very quick athletic player who can dig and pass very well.
Special rules apply to the Libero. I'm sure I don't know them all but here are the ones I can remember:

                1. Libero's are restricted to perform as a back row player only.
                2. Libero's can not block at the net.
                3. Libero's can not contact a ball above the plane of the top of the net when sending the ball over the net to the opponent's side.
                4. A teammate may not complete an attack-hit when the ball is entirely above the top of the net and the ball is coming from an overhand finger pass (a set) by a libero in the front zone.
                5. Libero's are not subject to any substitution limits. Otherwise, team's are limited to 15 subs per game.

I'm not sure the motivation behind the creation of this position, but it does provide a chance for small, athletic girls to play competitive VB.

WSU's Kelly Broussard is an outstanding Libero in my opinion.

Not generally. Also our student support is pretty weak, IMHO.

Well we did't quite get there against Cal Poly drawing only 1,591 fans for Sunday's match.

That's not a terrible crowd for a Women's VB game but I sensed that Lambo was somewhat disappointed with the atmosphere for Sunday's match considering the quality of opponent.

As I expected the K-State match probably cannibalized some of the attendance from the Friday and Sunday matches.

The attendance record we set vs K-State is probably well out of reach unless and until we play K-State at home again or perhaps can get a home match with KU.

I'm hoping we might be able to draw 3,500 to 4,000 for the match with preseason MVC favorite UNI on September 15th.

Compare our attendance with Northern Iowa:

                        North Texas-WSU: 2147
                        KSU-WSU: 6024
                        Cal Poly-WSU: 1591

                        Western Michigan-UNI: 1861
                        Wright State-UNI: 1142
                        Kentucky-UNI: 1571

Our disappointing attendance against Cal Poly beat two of UNI's three game attendance figures and our total attendance of 9762 is more than double UNI's total of 4574.
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

We've been the class of the Valley in attendance for several years now.

I'm hoping for even bigger and better things.

Shocks were #10 in attendance in 2006 at 2,083 per match.

Last year 2,600 per match would put you into the #5 spot in National Attendance. I think that #5 national attendance spot is an attainable goal for Shocker fans to have in their sights.

At 3,254 per match after the 1st weekend we are probably at our high point of the year. We have 11 remaining home matches left. We need to average 2,422 per match over the 11 matches to average 2,600 for the year which may or may not be Top 5 this year.

The Big 4 in attendance Hawaii (7,186), Wisconsin (4,328), Nebraska (4,178) and Minnesota (3,938) are probably out of our reach.

Honestly its hard to believe that we cannot average 3k + per match with the schedule Lambo has put together.

The only negative I see is that back to back (or in the case of this weekend, back to back to back) will wear out all but the diehard fans.

Weekday games will also not be well attended, especially against inferior competition.

One would hope that many of the Saturday crowd will return throughout the season if only for one of the weekend games.

It really is too good of a product to be poorly attended.

Our only remaining home Non-conference matches are 2 Tuesday matches vs UMKC and Chicago State, neither of which will be particularly big draws.

On the plus side most of our big MVC home matches are on Saturday night (UNI, ILS and CU). Unfortunatelyy, the MSU match is on a Friday even though that is our only match that weekend. Not sure why we would not play that on Saturday (that is also MSU's only match that weekend).

Senior night is a Saturday night match vs Creighton which should be a good draw. First of all it's Creighton and secondly we have 2 great seniors to say farewell to (Sara and Abby).

Personally, I think the key to improving our average attendance is attracting more student support to the matches. However, despite free admission and double points for Shocker Maniacs, that doesn't seem to be happening. Maybe the Maniacs are showing up, registering their attendance, then leaving. For whatever the reason, VB just doesn't seem to have caught on with the student body.
