"Bears came out sluggish and out of synch against UALR, falling behind early in both Sets 1 and 2. In Set 1, Bears were never really in it. Set 2 was heck of a seesaw until late when the Trojans put some air between them and the Bears. Playing catch-up can take a toll on you. Too much indecision and passing errors went on in both sets. Bears were dominant in Set 3. Where was this team in the first two sets? Set 4 was a tough one to take. Bears were up 19-16, lost the lead and then came back from being down 24-21 to tie it and send it into OT. Then UALR kept the Bears at bay, winning out at 27-25…. a tough loss to take in the Mary Jo Invite.
UALR is a very good team. After the first two sets, I was wondering what the Bears had to do to score a point….gotta give them credit….Trojans digging was superb, they had two excellent finishers, and they have a talented bunch of very experienced players. But Bears were out of balance and confused too often in this one. I hope not, but this group of Bears may take a while to establish their own winning identity. There’s no doubt about it: when it came to crunch time, UALR took it to the Bears and not vice versa. As so many sports pop psychs say, “It’s a mental toughness thang” in the end.
There were positives in this one: Bears’ digging kicked in after the first two sets. Terri D and others made some great saves. The middles hit a pretty good percentage, as did Addie Foley at OH. The energy level picked up when Calli Norman was in the front line….this “girl” gives the Bears a physical presence at net, and she comes to play. There’s much more than just this to the picture, but a simplified impression I have is: Get the frustrating “Who’s got it?” kind of boo-boos out of the picture, some better return of service, passing and setting and Bears can create problems in The Valley. The finishers are there.
Unfortunately, the first Valley contest takes the team to Wichita next Friday, last ranked #18 and 10-0. Shocks have come off sweeping Washington St (all 3 sets were close) and Montana St at Pullman, Wash and taking down Northwestern in a 5 set come from behind effort. Shocks are presenting a case for being one of the best Valley teams in the history of the league. A ways to go of course, but they’ve been playing very well, obviously. Probably will be a very difficult atmosphere to play in. Shocks were 7th in attendance in the country last year, and their fan base is usually out in full force for matches against the Bears. After Wichita, Bears fly up to South Dakota St for a Sunday match. "
Make this " their fan base is usually out in full force for matches against the Bears " come true.
