    Lambo November 14th radio show.

Talked about the relatively new 6-2 lineup. Jody was not able to practice last week. Rolled the dice two weekends in a row and it worked. They basically are going to set up as a 5-1 and then roll into and out of the 6-2 depending what the opponent is doing. We will use 3 front row attackers (6-2) if they feel they need to or 2 front row attackers (5-1) if that is what is called for. They will bob and weave in and out of each.

Was pleased with the defensive side this weekend. When that is good they are pretty good in the Valley.

Discussed their improved blocking. Have been working on it in practice and the new scheme allows Abbie to match up in a better situation (only two attackers on the front row).

Talked about 20 wins for the 14th consecutive year. He said he isn't chasing 20 wins and it is only important if you have a quality schedule. He is more focused on building the RPI than on 20 wins.

Talked about Tabitha's and Dani's Valley honors discussed in in above post. Lambo says this will help Tabitha's confidence and reward her for her hard work.

Lambo doesn't really want to have a team that relies on only one or two players that the opponent can focus one. He prefers a balanced attack.

Talked about the incoming recruits. Kora Kauling comes in ready made as a setter. Chase Jackson's dad played basketball with Reggie Miller. Didn't really say too much about them.

Lambo talked about his focus on training and developing his entire roster and that can be atttractive to a lot of players who have potential but aren't can't miss prospects.

Talked about the big match with SIU (12-4) who has a huge opportunity taking on WSU (13-3) and MSU (14-2) this weekend and he expects SIU to be very ready to go and he expects them to play better at home than they did in Wichita earlier in the year. He wasn't sure what happened to Meg Viggars are whether or not she will play for SIU this weekend. He said he doesn't follow that stuff too closely.

Shocks now 7th in the nation in hitting percentage, assists per sets and kills per set. This is his most capable offensive team he has ever put on the floor when they are playing well.

Defense is getting better. Patted the coaches and players on the back. The realized early on that they had a problem, they addressed it, worked on it and have improved quite a bit.

This approach makes it a little harder to generate the big numbers that people want to see when handing out individual awards.

He pointed out that while at Arizona, they started getting a mix of "polished" kids and "potential" kids and that it worked to the detriment of the "potential" kids because it was hard to run a practice to benefit both groups. Club coaches understand the "manufacturing plant" (his words) that Chris has and help guide kids to the kind of program that is best for them. Plus kids that are into science and lots of experiments. :)

There is has to be some reason he has more walk-ons (13) on the roster than scholarship players (12) and seems to keep them happy.

The Futures RPI for the Valley teams of interest.

RPI Rank. (LastW Rank) Team (Overall wins - losses, Conference wins - losses, Strength of Schedule)

          35. (37) Wichita State (22-7, 15-3) - 55

          46. (46) Northern Iowa (23-8, 14-4) - 84

          47. (49) Missouri State (25-7, 16-2) - 110

          52. (56) Southern Illinois (22-10, 13-5) - 85

The astute observer will note that it is not possible for the Shockers and Missouri State to achieve the records given (both teams would win both matches this weekend against Southern Illinois and Evansville) and Southern Illinois to achieve theirs (a 1-1 record this weekend). Such is the probabilistic nature of predictions using Pablo.

The +1 Conference Win, -1 Conference Win RPI Projections:

          35. Wichita State (15 Wins-31) (-) (14 Wins-39)

          46. Northern Iowa (14 Wins-42) (-) (13 Wins-46)

          47. Missouri State (16 Wins-47) (-) (15 Wins-48)

          52. Southern Illinois (13 Wins-50) (-) (12 Wins-57)

And here I confess to being a bit confused. Using the Shockers as an example, if they are projected to have a season-ending RPI of 35 with a record of 15-3, then how can they have, in the +1/-1, an RPI of 31 with 15 wins. I suspect I am demonstrating how much attention I paid in Probability and Statistics.

To explain some, the Shockers have (using Pablo) about a 72% chance of beating Southern Illinois and a 98% chance of beating Evansville. That is 1.70 more wins, rounded to 2 and a 15-3 record. Similar calculations (0.67+0.97=1.64) and rounding also give Missouri State two more wins. Southern Illinois has a 28% chance of beating the Shocks and 33% chance of beating the Bears, giving the Salukis 0.61 wins and 1.39 losses. The rounding gives them one more win and one more loss. All of the above can't happen on the court, but it can happen on paper.

The Shockers end the season with an average attendance of 2264, first in the Valley and twelfth in the nation.
