I predict a battle in the Valley this season. At least amongst the top teams (and maybe an occasional middle team getting hot and taking a match).
Lots of talent potential amongst the front-runners, but with some bouts of inconsistency.

If we can get Jody Larson back and stay healthy, I like WSU's chances to go 14-4 or better. We have a great setter and several scoring options. Littles could be better but have room to improve with the reigning MVC Libero of the Year still active.

Like most teams, if we can't stay healthy (already lost our best 6 rotation player, the 2nd best 6 rotation player is hurt and her fill in is likely out for the season with a knee injury suffered Saturday) then we'll likely fall out of the top 1-3.

The way Jody has played this year i am not sure she isn't our #1 six rotationer, think Jenny would have helped a lot on the back row with the struggles we have seen there. Also probably would have helped on the games that Tabitha struggles. Okay...how about 1A and 1B?

Jody has been terrific this year. Kara Maleski did a really nice job filling in against UTSA after Regan went down. However, while Kara's performance was somewhat of a pleasant surprise she and Jody are totally different styles of players and Kara really can't bring the same things to a match that Jody is able to. Among other things Jody was by far and away our best back row attacker. In fact, I am not sure we have anyone else who can really fill in with respect to that specific talent.

Hopefully, Jody will recover reasonably quickly. I guess we don't know Regan's status for sure but it certainly did not sound promising. With Regan's loss we not only lost our primary backup for Jody, we also lost our primary backup for Emily and probably our ability to even think about using a 6-2 (although that seemed to have been put on the back burner prior to this past weekend anyway).

Will be interesting to hear what Lambo has to report on his radio show this evening.

With conference coming up, will he tell us anything about injuries?

                        From the Coach's Show:

Mike and Lambo began by discussing the injuries to Regan and Jody. Although there has been no diagnosis in either case, when a player (Regan, in this case) goes down in agony, clutching her knee, experience tells Lamb that she is not likely to be back soon. They are still waiting on an MRI. Jody is undergoing an extended examination. They started by looking at her ankle, but are now also looking at her foot. (Or vice versa.) Lambo names a couple of things that can happen when you get rolled on as Jody did, and neither of them sounded like she would be back soon. But perhaps neither of the cases he suggested are the case in this instance.

Mike noted that when Jody came into the program, she was hard-nosed and brought a toughness and edge that may not have existed before. In this discussion, Lamb referred to Jody as a carnivore.

Lamb noted that with their options limited as a result of the injuries, the Shockers will be easier to prepare for.

Mike brought up the nice job Kara Maleski did when called upon even though she had very limited game experience. Lambo threw Jordan Roberts' name in that pot, while bemoaning the fact that his "libero crew" (the littles, in general?) did not rise to the occasion in the same way.

They rehashed again why there are Monday games (next Monday is the home opener for the Shocks and there will no radio show). If you don't already know, ask @1972Shocker:. :)

Mike noted that the RPI for the Shockers is 45 (as calculated by Rich Kern - the NCAA has not started publishing an RPI yet), while that of Missouri State is 63. [Note: Southern Illinois is 65 and Northern Iowa is 68. Nobody else is in two-digit territory.] Lambo then gave an extended monologue about the hoped-for W/L percentage of the Shockers' non-conference opponents. The "goal" is in the low 60s% - last year it was 58.5%. He thinks this year's number will be 64-65%, allowing the Shocker RPI to rise from its current level.

With the conference opener this Friday against Missouri State in Springfield, Mike noted the friendship between Lambo and Melissa Stokes. Lamb noted that they came up the same way, through club ball, an assistant somewhere and then getting a head coaching job. He tries to be friendly with everyone ("we are all in this together" or something like that), but some are not so interested. (Someone immediately comes to mind for me.) But when the whistle blows, the gloves come off and we often get a five-set war.

Lambo noted that they would be asking Abbie to more things (things they have already worked on), and Kara and Alex are going to have to step in and help.

There was a little more, but that is the gist of it.

Lambo mentioned that Emily and Jody had known each a long time and had a connection which I believe we have seen this year in the improved play. Liked his comment about Jody seeming to have a disdain for players on the other side of the net....Play Angry!

Creighton's best win, per RPI, is actually their sweep over TCU. Your wins over Marquette and Creighton are the MVC's best wins overall imo, along with UNI over Kentucky and MoSt over Illinois. Sorry to hear about the WSU injuries. Get well soon, and good luck in the conference season!
