  • Giorgia Civita vs Sina Uluave

Thought I would check in to see how Giorgia is faring at Wisconsin. From what I have read it sounded like Giorgia transferred to Wisconsin because she wanted a new challenge, doesn't like losing and would love to win an NCAA Championship. It would appear that Giorgia has, in fact, fulfilled those goals at #1 ranked Wisconsin who may very well win an NCAA Championship.

The question is will how big of a role will Giorgia play in Wisconsin's success this year.

Giorgia played in all 13 sets of undefeated Wisconsin's first 4 matches. She has not played in any of Wisconsin's last 4 matches. Is she injured? Not sure. Did not find any reports on an injury. Maybe a Covid-19 quarantine but again no reports of that. In the 4 matches that Giorgia did play in she had 27 digs for an average of 2.08 per set. Lauren Barnes who is the team leader with 3.52 digs per set but has played in all 25 sets over 8 matches appears to be Wisconsin's libero with Giorgia filling in as a defensive specialist (when she was playing).

By comparison in her two full years playing as a Shocker Giorgia averaged 5.51 digs per set. Giorgia was the AAC Libero of the year in 2018 when she set WSU records for most digs in a season at 728 and highest digs per set average of 5.78.

While I am not sure how Giorgia feels about her move to Wisconsin at this point I am not unhappy with how it has worked out for the Shocks as I very much like what I am seeing from Sina Uluave at the libero position and I would think Sina has a lot of upside considering she is a novice at the position with only 7 matches in her career at the position.

The Shockers are not in a class with Wisconsin and the Badgers will win big with or without Giorgia. But the Shockers are back on a winning track so far and I think Sina's move to the libero has been an important factor in that renewed success. I think Sina was smart enough to see that with the young talent the Shocks have added that playing time as a 5'-11" (maybe) outside hitter was perhaps going to be a challenge. I think she made a great decision in volunteering to move to the libero position. Giorgia is certainly very good at reading, anticipating and positioning but is nowhere near as athletic or rangy as Sina is and I would expect Sina's instincts to develop a lot as she plays the position. I also like having a libero who is a bit taller at 5'-11" or whatever her actual height is. I remember it seems like UNI always had terrific libero's at or round 6' on their teams who were very effective.

I wish Giorgia well and hope she is happy. However, I am pretty satisfied with how the libero position seems to working out for the Shocks. Sina has played in all 7 matches and 25 sets the Shocks have played and she is averaging 4.0 digs per set (4.55 digs per set over her last 3 matches/11sets). and Sina has done a very good job as the secondary out of system setter. Giorgia is not doing much setting at Wisconsin with only 2 assists in her 13 sets while Sina has 20 assists in her 25 sets so far this year.

You have to use every trick in the book to get most Shockernetters to pay attention to Shocker women's sports.

Is Sina as good as Georgia? She looked good to me last week but I’m not a good volleyball evaluator.

I am not qualified to answer that. Would be an interesting question for Lambo. I would take anything I opine about it with a grain of salt. I do not think Sina after only 7 games as a libero is a good as Georgia was in her two most productive years with the Shocks. But I think Sina could eventually be that good or better. I think Sina has much better physcial tools at her disposal primarily being longer and more athletic which gives her more range IMO than Giorgia had. Giorgia's strength was her ability to read the play and position herself in the most advantageous way and she was very good and handling heat. But I never thought Giorgia was overly athletic or rangy. Not sure if Sina will ever be as good as Giorgia in reading and anticipating as Giorgia was but it does seem to me like Sina has some natural instincts for that which can be developed over time and I think she will have better range than Giorgia.

Also the libero is often used as the secondary setter when the team is out of system, meaning the setter is not available to receive the initial pass and make the set, and so far Sina has done a very good job of that.

BTW, I believe Giorgia did get her degree from Wichita State and is pursuing an advanced degree at Wisconsin and I congratulate her on that. She should be able to play both this year and next if she stays healthy so she would have both her undergrad and grad education paid for by her volleyball skills. Good for her. She had and ACL tear in Italy beforef joining the Shocks and two more season ending knee injuries while at Wichita State all on the same knee (left knee I think). So hopefully her knees hold up on her.

WuDrWu and flyingMoose are probably more knowledgable than I am when it comes to volleyball. So maybe they will way in with their opinions on your question.

It would certainly be interesting to have access to some of the stats that the coaches track, but aren't in the box score, especially on passing. Getting perfect passes to the setter is such a huge factor in success in volleyball (and is a major component of a good libero) and the average fan has little access to data on the point compared to other things that happen on the court.

And yes I should have mentioned The Mad Hatter as a valuable source of knowledge as well. And I totally agree about the good passes being a huge factor in the success of a volleyball team.

The thing that attracts me to volleyball is the need for teamwork and good communication to be successful. Doesn't make much difference how good your setter and hitters are if they are constantly chasing bad passes the puts the setter out of position. A good pass is what is needed to get "in sytem". A bad pass can make a good set difficult. A good pass makes it much easier but can still be ruined by a bad set or a ball handling error. A bad set makes it more difficult for the hitters to take aggressive swings. A good set makes it much easier but the hitter still has to do their job.

There are few volleyball plays that are individually based such as service aces, solo stuff blocks and perhaps slamming an opponent overpass to the floor but for the most part volleyball involves a good dig and pass, a good set and a good attack and even that doesn't guarantee a score. If any one of those actions are subpar everything that follows is more difficult. Sometimes you can have a great dig but it is so difficult that it leads to a poor pass but those are valuable as well as thy keep the point alive and at least gives the team a chance to win the point and are valuable as well.

I watched a couple Wisconsin games earlier this year and Geo made some amazing plays to keep rallies alive that make her appear like an extremely high level defender. Also watched as on more routine plays that the setter had to attack some overpasses or track down a pass and resort to a bump pass to set an outside. So about what we got used to seeing at WSU. Note relying on the setter to attack an overpass doesn't work to well when running a 6-2.

Giorgia played all seven of the sets against Michigan State this weekend. She had fourteen digs with four service aces and three service errors.

Glad to hear she is not injured. I see that Wisconsin won both matches with 4 of the 7 sets pretty much being blowouts to remain undefeated at 10-0 on the season.

A note on Volley Talk said (if I recall correctly) she was in street clothes but on the bench the previous weekend against Indiana. She was also out the weekend prior to that against Rutgers. Sounds like she was slightly dinged for a bit.

Civita’s absence was due to being in concussion protocol due to an injury suffered in practice the first week of February.

Before I became interested in and started following Shocker volleyball in 2003 I would never have picked women's volleyball as a sport where a lot of concussions would occur. But that seems to be a relatively common occurrence. I was a surprised with Nicole Anderson returned in the 2nd Tulsa match after she banged her head on the floor. Looked like she whacked ir pretty good.

I know the Shocks have had a number of concussions by players getting whacked in the head during setting practice or warmups. Mikaela Raudsepp missed quite a bit of time after being hit in the head while the Shocks were hitting their warmup sets prior to a match in Evansville that I happened to attend although I did not see it happen.
