    v Wyoming

    Pre-match comments

One of the better efforts in managing the game plan last night. But too many attack errors.

"Discussion of process, not the product" with the team even though the schedule is really difficult cumulatively.

Even though there will be talent gaps, there should not be fight/grit gaps.

Need consistency - ball control, setting is an issue - 2/3 of the ball control is by freshmen. Just have to keep working.

    Set One

Briley, Kayce, Emma, Nicole, Sina, Megan and Kara are the starters.

Kora is the second setter in a 6-2.

    7-3 and a Cowgirl TO.

    18-12 and another Wyoming TO.

A Brylee kill finishes the set, 25-17.

    .500 v .259

Megan was 7-1-12 for .500. Only two Shocker errors in 26 swings.

      Set Two

      Same starters.

1-6 including three blocks and the Shockers take a TO.

Four-point Shocker run brings the score to 6-7.

Later, a four-point Cowgirl run sends the score to 11-16 and brings a Shocker TO.

11-20 before Chinelo stops the run.

Three-point run by the Shocks brings the score to 17-23 and a Wyoming TO.

Wyoming takes the second set, 25-20, to even the match.

      .000 v .159 for the set, .206 v .197 for the match.

Megan still has the seven kills. Brylee, Nicole, and Sina have four.

Shocks call timeout trailing 11-16. Shocks have 5 kills and 8 errors this set and are hitting -.115.

Not a very good set for the Shocks but at least they did show a little life late after digging themselves a 9 points deficit at 14-23.

      Set Three

      Same starters.

The Shockers take early three-point leads: 3-0, 6-3, then 10-4 and a Wyoming TO.

A three-point run by the Cowgirls (11-7) and the Shockers take a TO.

16-16 before two Shocker points to get to 18-16. Wyoming takes a TO.

Cowgirls take their first lead at 18-19.

19-21 and the Shocks take a TO.

Wyoming takes the third set, 25-22, after building a 24-19 lead. Cowgirls lead two sets to one. The Shocks led in this set, 11-4.

.118 v .222 for the set. This after .500 in the first set.

i'm not really sure the Shocks have enough self confidence to win this match. However, a rally for wins in Sets 4 and 5 would probably be a big boost for the collective self confidence of the team.

      Set Four

Arianna begins the set by serving, her first appearance this trip.

0-4 before a Wyoming service error. The Shocks get back to 4-4 before a Cowgirl kill.

Kayce dumps for a 9-7 lead. Wyoming TO at 10-7, a five-point Shocker run.

      13-16 and a Shocker TO.

A service error and two hitting errors by the Shocks. 16-20 and a Shocker TO.

      19-20 and a Cowgirl TO.

Service ace ends the match. 25-20 in the fourth set.

LiveStats not agreeing with Mike's play-by-play, so who knows about stats.

Super-pumped for Brylee. Pleased with Kayce in 5-1.

Megan starts well and then breaks down. Need to look into why. Going to her too much?

Not busy enough in the middle.

      Happy with effort and competitiveness.

Wyoming was complimentary, saw a bright future for the Shocks.

Got interrupted - there may have been more.

Looks like the Shocks are in a 5-1 this set with Kayce doing the setting. We'll see how long Lambo sitcks with that.

        Good catch.

I think Lambo described it best in the pre-match interview when he said it's kind of like a JV team playing the varsity. The lack of experience is definitely showing.

Lambo pleased with what he got from Brylee and was pretty happy with Kayce in the 5-1 which might be better when Dmadj returns and perhaps gives him a slide hitting M-1 option.

Last season, Creighton, Wyoming, and the Shockers got together in Omaha. In several previous years, the Jays and Shockers were joined in a triangular by Iowa State.
Coming next, it’s the best of both worlds as Creighton, Wichita, Iowa State, and Wyoming meet in Laramie in a tournament to open the 2020 season.

Hopefully, that is set to rotate through all 4 participating schools as hosts over 4 years. Not sure the Shocks will be quite ready to stay with Creighton and Iowa State next year, especially early on, but after that I have hopes the Shocks will be back to being highly competitive.

It will be year 3 of his “rebuilding year(s)”. Fully expect a successful season.

What constitutes a "successful" season in your mind?

Competing for an AAC regular season title, at least a top 3 finish, and at a minimum a bubble for an at large.
I’ve scaled back my expectations somewhat. He needs to shave more.

Well, I would temper that a bit more...no way they are gonna be in the AAC title hunt. Too much youth. But I do think it is fair to expect a winning record next year. It's gonna be 2 years before they are competing at the top of the conference IMHO.

Creighton’s vb non-conference schedule is canceled, so they won’t be part of this.

This tournament is back and moves to Wichita, after being held at Creighton 2019 and Wyoming 2020 (canceled), with the South Dakota Coyotes replacing Iowa State in the 2021 iteration.

                          From the Creighton Athletics site:
In its final non-conference weekend CU will head to Wichita, Kan., for the Shocker Volleyball Classic. That event will take place from Sept. 17-18 and feature Wyoming, South Dakota and host Wichita State. South Dakota split two five-set matches against Creighton and went 16-7 last season while reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time, where it fell to Missouri.
