Whether or not Sara's number is retired, is the interior of the arena the best place to do it? Yeah, I know. She competed in there, but every other banner in there is for basketball...
Personally, whether the number is retired or not, I don't think it should go in the rafters of the arena. Maybe somewhere else in the arena, like the front entry there or something....Deep in the heart of couldn't give a crap about college basketball-land and I miss the SHOX.

The have the section in the rafters where the volleyball banners are hung. Sara Lungren 2007 Division I Honorable Mention All-American.
Stanford and Penn State dominated the 1st team with 3 players each.
Sarah Pavan was Nebraska's only 1st team player.
Juliann Faucett of Texas is on the 1st team as a Freshman.
Angie Pressey a 5'8" OH from Cal is on the 1st team. I checked Cal's roster and yes Angie Pressey is listed at 5'8". If you are a 1st All-American OH at 5'8" you must really be able to fly. I need to see this girl play. Hopefully, I can catch her in the Final Four.Comment

Every player on the 1st team came from a #1 regional seed (and all from top 10 national seeds).
Gorana Maricie of Oregon was the only player to make 2nd team without being on a #1 regional seed.
Only Chelsea ******* of BYU and Ashley Schatzle of Michigan State made 3rd team without being on a regional #1 seed.
My question, then, is how many of these #1 seeds really had multiple players better than Sara, and how many of these schools had people that should have been honorable mention, but because they play with a 1st teamer, are able to put up better numbers than Sara, who always gets the defenses best shot?
For instance, Nebraska placed 5 players on the top 3 teams. My question is whether Jordon Larson, who was a first teamer a year ago, really deserved 3rd team this year over someone like Sara, or whether her name recognition and the fact that she is playing with 4 1st and 2nd teamers is what got her that spot.
I just find it interesting, for instance, that #1 seed Wisconsin gets knocked out in the second round and gets a second teamer and a third teamer, while BYU gets to the round of 8 and only gets a third teamer.

So this brings up the question then, since the cards are severely stacked against a player from WSU being an AA, then should she have her number retired due to politics? They will never go for a smaller conference player with the way things played out this time.
Sara has to be better than a chunk of those players, at least on the third team. Only she doesn't come from a "BCS" conference school. That's what sucks.Comment

I am afraid that I would have to vote no. All-American status is a good guideline to go by. Those numbers hanging all belonged to athletes who lead the Shocks to national attention, and/or won several NCAA post season games, and/or lead the nation in statistical catagories. Sara has done a great job, if the Shocks were a top ten team we would probably be hanging a jersey.Comment

Also, IMHO it is difficult to lead the nation in statistical categories if you are on a good VB team, because the best VB teams try to have balance and the more varied your attack the tougher you are to stop. A great basketball player can take over a game. A great VB is only as good as her teammates allow her to be. Also, as Coach Lamb has pointed out Sara developed into an excellent all-around Volleyball player not just a front-line specialist. She became a very fine back-row player and she also was a very good server. Sometimes stastistics don't tell the whole story.
Also the Shocks won 3 MVC Championships in her 4 years. Not sure any of the guys hanging from the rafters can make the same claim, although I would need to research that. Granted winning an MVC Championship in the Stallworth years was about as tough as winning a National Championship.
Finally, Sara achieved this legacy while battling ankle and knee injuries her Junior and Senior year so toughness and leadership were never an issue. Also, I don't think you can totally ignore her academic achievements with a GPA in the neighborhood of 3.8. In fact , on senior night Sara and Abby received the loudest applause for their academic achievements. No doubt Shocker Volleyball fans anyway, appreciate this aspect of Shocker role models.
All that being said, I do think that Sara probably falls just short of deserving to have her number/jersey retired.
However, her accomplishments are not to be diminished in any way and I will be very disappointed if she is not voted into the Shocker HOF as soon as she becomes eligible.
Hopefully, one day we will look back on what Sara Younes, Elizabeth Meyer, Jen Ray, Varci Dohs, Andee Hartig, Abby Harsh, Sara Lungren and others did to elevate a program from total obscurity to national prominence and credit them for launching Shocker Volleyball into something special.
Now if the Shocker nation will respond to what these ladies have started and get behind this program with the kind of support it deserves, we could build something really, really special with Shocker Volleyball.

72, excellent points. Here is my slight devils advocate view.
I always wondered how much better SL would have been if she hadn't played so much back row, her body wouldn't have taken such a pounding.
She should be a first year selection into the HOF!
Stats thing is a very good point.
The Stallworth years were very competitive, so were the early 80's
I believe we had Tulsa & WSU in the top 10 at one time, and Bradley came on very strong during the Hawkins years.
I would like to add a name to the vb players listed- Karen Augsperger, two time Libero of the year(?) and played professionaly overseas for two years. Might be the only Shocker to do so.
How about a ring of honor under the photos in the concours of Koch, any athlete with all-american honors could be listed below. Do it for all sports.Comment

Sounds like a great idea. You do realize that most of the people mentioned would be from baseball. Yes Karen A. was great and I should have mentioned her in my post. I think Sarah Younes and Sara Lungren were both honorable mention All-Americans in their Senior years and are the only VB players to recieve any type of AA recognition. Sarah Y. was MVC POY her senior year and Sara L. was two-time MVC POY.Originally posted by boyshocker
