That remains to be seen. Nobody ever comes out and says we recruited badly. Wsu just had one recruiting class implode that was hyped pretty well.

It just seems that wsu lost more battles than they won in the recruiting war and seemed they had to settle for their backup choices.
I'm not sure I'd call Wessel, White or Hall backup choices. I don't know enough about Cotton.
Didn't wsu lose against a couple battles where the players chose cu instead of wsu? I seemed to recall some say they really wanted these guy(s).

Now white does seem to be one battle that wsu might have won (uni seemed to be interested - depending on who u listen to).

Hall was another Small win - but let's be truthful you have to recruit juco because of failures in other recruits. Juco recruits are risky as it is (u effectively get them for a year and half and if they dont work out your screwed) and Hall has some medical baggage that we all hope is behind him but that is additional risk.
I know Chatman was a loss to CU. Not sure if there was another.

Wessel was a top target that committed early and I agree would have gotten a lot more run if he were still available.

I'll give you the Hall/JUCO thing. I'm not a fan of having to go to JUCOs.

    • SB - First, we don't know what players WSU is really in a close battle for. Just because we've offered or that a player has been talked to doesn't mean we have a quality chance of signing them. We may be trying to break into that players existing preferred list.

This year, did we lose Josh Richardson? How close were we to him? Could we've gotten him had Martin stayed at Mo St, but lost him to the lure of Tennessee?

For what little I know, I preferred the signing of Ede over Guy. I think Guy would not have added that much this year and been of real value his senior year only. I think Ede has as much potential, or more, than Guy.

As for last year, do you call not getting Carter, but signing Joe a loss?

This year, we got some players that we were on early. Hall is a huge signing given who we lose this year. We held on to White who I think will be a quality 4 year player as well as Evan.

From what I remembered, I didn't think we were in very well on any of the Sunrise kids. They were all looking at BCS programs. However, because many of those schools were lower end BCS teams, I think the local team, WSU, got a harder look because of their performance this year.

Just what players in particular do you think we were a finalist for, then lost, and settled for a visably lesser player.

        Very good points ShockTalk.

One might think that if WSU does not get Gabe, we lost out on him. However, where, other than on ShockerNet was there any indication that we were recruiting him hard. Were we? Maybe. However, we as message board people may have simply gone crazy because he was at the school last week, and maybe he was only there for pickup games as his coach said.

If you don't have an inside source to tell you exactly what players the staff is really after, it is pretty tough to say who we missed out on. We might not have missed on anyone SB indicated, or we might have missed big on someone who has never been mentioned. Just because we at ShockerNet believe we're really after someone does not mean it is the case.

        • sCUm's recruiting class - Groselle 89, Dingman 85, Johnson 80, Chatman 40.

          WSU - White 89, Cotton 83, and Wessel 83, + Juco Hall.

I know it's just a loose rating system, but I don't see any visable losses here, even if we were hot on Chatman.

Please remember also that the recruiting staff probably put 30 offers on the table this year. Just because we didn't sign all 30 doesn't mean we lost. The staff takes the first kid that says "yes" at a paticular position and the rest move on.

Also, Hall is a JUCO that just about anyone in the country would find a spot for. He is VERY highly regarded, juco or not. We had three outstanding senior forwards graduate. That IS NOT a recruiting whole. Class imbalance, yes, but not poor recruiting.

We "won" with Hall, White, and Wessel. I would say we also won with Baker given that he chose to walk-on at WSU as a freshman. Cotton is highly regarded, but a mystery, and you can see why WSU would want Ede. Remember that he had offers from the Colonial and Atlantic 10 as a senior.

What freshman to be did you want this year that we offered, came for a visit, and said no?

            • I think the recruiting hole is a fair statement considering we don't have the personell to step in for those graduating and had to go JUCO. And that is what I believe he was getting at. Hamilton ended up not helping us and he was supposed to be one that would be ready to step in and ease the loss of those mentioned above. Nobody else on the roster fills that.

We have had basically a recruiting class not pan out. Some are going to be misses, but the fact that we've lost Kenny, Jerome and Tyler hurts. We have no sophomore class now and will almost certainly be bringing in a couple of JUCOs next year to try and bring a little class balance.

As far as who we offered, brought in, and still didn't get.... I'll go with Chatman.

I love the kids we're bringing in and look forward to finding out more about Cotton. Chatman would make me feel a lot better about our future PG situation. We'll see if Cotton will be able to do that.

              • Eddie Sutton had a very nice run at Okie State recruiting juco's mixed with high-shool kids. It can be made to work.

                          • I don't know what sort of con-job they worked on him, but if he's dumb enough to lease his next four years to a team that regularly gets its ass handed to it from all walks of life, regardless of any conference affiliation, perhaps he's headed in the direction best suited to him.
