This quote is misleading. Chamberlain, Taylor, Henderson, and Smith are just a few of the olayers to make an impression but not truly buy in.

Those that do will be successful, but the PG is the most complex in a complex system and only works with those who will do what is asked. Even Connor Frankamp couldn't meet full expectations.

Your message is misleading as well... You have to take into account health, competition, playing time, injuries, and overall goals of each player. 🐸🥃

      • 3G is a point guard guru in the fact that he has almost always found a way to solve our chemistry and leadership problems, even though we have not always had a true, point guard.

I found the article on the NBA changing (I don't remember where on Shockernet is was) to a position-less league. This mirrors Gregg's teams in that we have always had players who could play multiple positions, guard multiple players, had multiple skills, and were not traditional in what they do.

You are adding in all truth's.

Dan's post said whoever picks WSU will be great. Those who do the things Gregg wants and works harder than his peers will be great. He will give the tools, we just need the kids that bring the effort to use and sharpen them.

Greg Heiar was the guard Guru IMO. Was the position coach, main recruiter, etc. Had former players gush over his knowledge & impact he had on our guards the past few years. Obviously 3G gets the lion share of credit, and deservedly so, but the impact Heiar had on our guards cannot be understated.

            • It started before Heiar arrived (although Heiar was good and the guards liked him).

The year they won the NIT was before GH. Toure and Rags were the guards that year. Of course, we had Dmetrick and (I can't remember the other guards name but he was mainly a 3 point shooter specialist) too. None of them were point guards, and we became a team who had players with multiple skills. They all could pass, Rags was the best shooter, but Toure could attack the rim, they all rebounded, all could play defense (Gregg had to drag it out of some of them at that point), they all had pretty good handles, etc. But that was the year, when WSU became a power to be reckoned with consistently.

The Shocker "culture" was born and it has been here ever since. Fred was really the only true point guard we've ever had, but he could play off of others too. Heiar didn't produce these things. Gregg did and Heiar contributed as a team guy. I would say Heiar learned from Gregg.

              • 3G knows the importance of the next PG that comes in. Signing is a two way street, the next guy needs to have the skills/mind and I don't expect 3G to settle for anything other than the next great PG at WSU. We need a guy that can take over the team as early as next year. This is not a signing that will come lightly.

                • I'm not sure who the 5-star PG is who's supposed to be committed to Iowa state, but it doesn't really matter -- as for Harris and Iowa State, sometimes guys seek out competition from elite recruits (or current players) and sign where they know they're going to get it. My fellow Tide football fan small tyme can cite numerous examples of players who chose Alabama at stacked positions not in spite of the competition they'd be facing, but because of it. Actually, those are the guys you want to have, because they have the right competitive attitude.

One way or another, I'm confident this will all work out fine for WSU, even if Harris isn't ultimately the answer. The Shocks do pretty well with their PGs, and I doubt they're going to stop. And by the way, I notice from the Iowa State article linked that Harris is down to 5-9 from his original 5-11.

                  • The main two things that Harris does well is that he shoots well from 3 and he is a really quick guy who can penetrate/release the extreme pressure that a good defensive team can place on a team, and quick, pressuring defenses are what increase when you play more elite teams (this is what OSU did to us last year, Louisville too). We will see much more of this in the AAC.

That is why the switch to Landry at Point, was so effective. Conner either can't or doesn't beat too many defenders one on one and therefore pressuring defenses gave us problems until the switch to Landry.

By the way, Kountz is listed as a combo guard. However, he reminds me a lot of Landry as a tall guard with handles who can penetrate. Maybe Kountz will be our answer at Point guard. The advantage to Harris is that he provides with something we didn't have on the team. A small but Super Quick guard that almost no one can stay in front of on defense.

Hopefully he can make a big enough impression in the next two weeks before moving to Wichita.

                        • Man, I love when players get into the recruiting game as well. It just shows how excited they are to be apart of what we all know to be a wonderful program.

Pretty sure it's a two team race between Iowa State and WSU.
