Gene S. did have a lot of moxie, and hopefully, another perfect storm can happen (maybe not that good, but it has to start with someone) again. I’d certainly settle for a Fred VV, Ron, and Cle. That’s asking for a lot, I know.

But you may have a higher respect for Turgeon than I do. I never thought Turg had a lot of moxie. He always thought WSU had constraints, so he didn’t go after Top 50 or even 100 recruits.

I know Doc won't care for this, but I would not put Folger (but much better than H. Miller) with Turgeon either. While he was successful in his short 3-year stint, he did it mostly on the backs of Smithson players who were already proven and had 1 really good recruit and one other good recruit his last year before bailing out.
Turgeon had one MVC Championship, and a Sweet 16, and then back to 500. He did get into the NIT before that, but the NIT was much easier to get into. Turgeon’s recruiting was very ho hum with only a couple of 4* guys.Last edited by Shockm; July 15, 2023, 11:52 PM.

Terry Benton (probably our best rebounder ever) , and Robert Elmore were two of our best Centers.

Based on your comments, Turg apparently did more with less. Both were here 7 years. Mark had ONE losing season (his 1st season) while Harry had 4. Harry was 1 and done in the NCAAs. Mark made a S16. Yea, one would have thought that recruiting Cheese, Wilson, Benton, and Elmore over 7 years would have lead to better teams and better results. Didn't happen.....and not even close.

https://youtu.be/KVcv664GVAY?t=698 (time stamped at 11:38). Landed on his feet just like a cat. Too bad that right cross missed it's target (AC probably didn't want to get ejected from the big game, like Crawford should have).
You're probably thinking of Maurice Evans.Last edited by ShockingButTrue; July 16, 2023, 09:12 PM.

That one and done team for Harry Miller was ahead by double digits only to "choke" at the end to Michigan who took second in the tournament that year. That team really came on the second half of the season and had a lot of talent (Cheese, Cal Bruton, Troegle, Elmore, Bob Gray, etc.). Probably good enough to go far, but not to be.

It's easy to spread into other areas of conversation, but if we're talking about our coaches having moxie in recruiting, Turgeon didn't seem to take risks after top recruits, although Kyle Wilson was a 4* recruit we got through transfer. Harry Miller's slow, methodical offense (not to mention his lack of charisma) kept him from being interesting for high level recruits.

He probably (most likely) had a role in FVV not making the international team several years ago. After all he was a -ahem- consultant for that team that ended up with Melo running the point.Last edited by ShockingButTrue; July 16, 2023, 12:02 PM.
