Top Shocker T&F performances on Friday at the Texas Relays, San Francisco Distance Carnival and The Stanford Invitational.

It's early but Jared Belardo's 25-4.5 long jump displaced teammate Rayvon Allen at the top of the AAC this spring and Jared's 51-3 improved on his own AAC best this spring at the Texas Relays. Not sure why Rayvon did not compete in the Texas Relays.

I will note though that Hunter Veith's decathlon results are not on the books yet at least at the TFRRS site. That effort included a long jump of 25-6.25.

In San Francisco Pedro Montoya's 10k time of 31.11.35 was a PR and is the best in the AAC so far but again it is early and Zach Penrod's 1,500m time of 3.48.89 is also an early leader in the AAC.

As I said it is early so hard to say whether some of these AAC best marks will hold up and, of course, the athletes who know hold them can improve on them as well.

And Hunter should get better post collegiately if he can stay healthy. Remember he lost a lot of time to a broken leg as a freshman and to blowing out his elbow as a sophomore.

I think most decathletes probably peak around 26-28 years of age. For one thing it takes many years to master all 10 events.

The reason Rayvon Allen did not compete at The Texas Relays is that he was at the Emporia State Relays where the true freshman did very well winning the triple jump at 51-3.75 which with a 4.1 mph helping wind preventing it counting in the record book. However, his 2nd best jump if 50-9.75 was with the wind below the allowable limit as is the 9th best jump i the NCAA this year.

Rayvon also ran a 22 flat 200m dash which is not bad for a young man who had run this race much and who is a horizontal jump specialist.

Yes, although the coverage he has been given by the Wichita Eagle is not deserved. Meaning he deserves more than nothing IMHO for a 6,000+ heptathlon and national runner-up finish and an 8,000+ decathlon to open the outdoor season. I guess it boils down to publishing what people are interested in and Hunter's exploits apparently don't make the cut.

During the indoor season I expressed the opinion RFr Jake Horsch out of Andale may be the next in a long line of top notch Shocker multi-event T&F athletes. I see he just one the KT Woodman decathlon competition with a score of 7,009. Yeah that's 1,000 points behind where Shocker Sr. All-American Hunter Veith is currently residing but still it seems like a decent score for a freshman (redshirt or otherwise). Not sure what ot compare it to. Not sure Hunter had a decathlon as a freshman since he broke his leg his freshman year.

While it is still early in the season that score is the 2nd best in the AAC this year behind Hunter and it is #20 nationally and 2nd best in the nation among freshmen. Georgia has a 6-6, 20-year old freshman from Estonia who has already broken 8,000.

Jake needs a little speed work to catch up to Hunter in the 100 and 110H and he has a long way to go in the jumps. He is pretty close to Hunter already in the discuss but has some work to do in the shot put and javelin although should come with work and maturity. Jake already is superior to Hunter in the 400m, 800m and 1500m runs.. Jake ran a 48.54 400m at the Woodman compared to Hunter's PR of 48.66 and he ran a 4:21.05 1500m run at the Woodman compared th Hunter's PR of 4:46.38.

I think the key for Jake will be how well he can develop his high jump, long jump and pole vaulting skills.

BTW national Heptathlon Champion Tim Duckworh out of Kentucky now has the top Decathlon score in the nation at 8,145. Hunter Veith and his 8,046 remain in 2nd with the aforementioned Georgian Freshman, Johannes Erm, closed behind at 8,020.

Junior Aaron True, out of Leroy, Kansas, with the highlight of Friday's KT Woodman meet with a javelin throw of 236.5 setting a new PR. This moves him into 4th all-time at Wichtia State and is the 6th best throw in the nation so far this year and the best throw in the AAC this year. Freshman Taran Taylor took second at 206-11. Taran owns the 7th best trhow in the AAC this year at 220-7 which is the best throw among Freshmen.

Pretty solid performance by Sr. Austin Sturdy, Fr. Ethan Kossover and Fr. Corey Landon in the 3,000m steeplechase. These 3 guys currently sit 3rd, 4th and 5th in this event on the AAC performance charts.

The Shockers pulled out of the John Jacobs Invitational at OU this weekend due to the high probability of thunderstorms. They lost a good chunk of the KT Woodman to weather last weekend and what they were able to get in was not under great conditions. As an alternative they will head over to Cemtral Missouri to compete in the Mule Relays on Friday.

The most notable peformance for he Shocker men at the UCM Mule Relays was Hutner Veith, who won the 110m hurldes in 14.34 which was a new PR (he ran a 14.34 in last years MVC Championships but it was wind aided. Friday's wind was only 0.1 mph well below the maximum allowable.) This is the second best mark in the AAC this year.

Aaron True won the javelin with a solid throw of 224-2 which is 6th best in the AAC this year but 12 feet short of the PR and AAC sason best 236-5 he threw last week.

The Shocks are sending some of their distance runners to Des Moines to compete at the Drake Relays on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
