  • 2017 Men's Track & Field Recruiting Class Announced

Coach Steve Rainbolt has announced 24 new Shockers in his 2017 men's track and field recruiting class.

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State men's and women's track and field teams welcome 48 newcomers to the program this fall, including 29 from the state of Kansas, five junior college transfers, and two from overseas.

Coach Bolt made his usual haul of Kansas kids signing 15 athletes with 11 of those out of high school (4 from Andale) and 4 out of Kansas Jucos. The remaining 9 include 3 from Missouri, 2 from Illinois and 1 each from Texas, Nebraska, Iowa and Virginia (via Barton County CC).

I find it hard to evaluate Track & Field recruiting classes because the kids grow and develop a lot once they get into the more focused and intense college training. Also high school marks in events such as hurdles and the throwing events aren't really comparable to college marks due to height and implement differences between high school and college. That said there were a few things that seemed notable.

Rayvon Allen out of Fenton, MO, a suburb on the SW side of St. Louis, has a PR in the triple jump that would have won the Valley Outdoor Championship last year. His long jump PR would have placed 5th in the Valley Outdoor.

6 athletes in this recruiting class have PR's of 6-7 or better which was good enough to score in last year's Valley Outdoor meet including a PR of 6-10 by Miles Griffith out of Class C St. Paul, NE High School which would have placed 3rd in the Valley last year. Only 6 Shockers have cleared 7 feet in school history.

Both Davon Spexarth out of Andale and Chandler Stiawalt out of Ness City had triple jumps that would have scored in the Valley last year. Chandler's sister, Regan, is a member of the Shocker Volleyball team.

Eric Etie out of Texas has 15-9 PR in the pole vault which would have placed 7th in the Valley Outdoor Championships last year and would have been only an inch short of 4th place.

Obviously Coach Bolt's recruiting has worked quite well in the Valley. Time will tell how well it holds up in the American.
