Shocker So. Austin Corley and Shocker Jr. Isaac Poe are both running in Heat 4 of the 400H. Heatl 3 is currently getting ready to go.

There are 6 heats. The top 3 from each heat plus the next 6 fastest times move on to the next round in the West.

Isaac finished well back but Austin's 51.96 was good enough for 3rd place and he will move on the the next round which will be run tomorrow evening at 7:15 pm.

Hunter Veith leaped 24-7 in the long jump. Not a bad jump but not good enough for this competition. He finished 27th. Still a good tuneup for the long jump that he will do in the Decathlon in Eugene.

Ugis Jocis finished 25th in the 1st round of the 1,500m run and is done despite running faster than 5 others who qualified from slower heats by placing in the Top 5 of their heat. Ugis ran 3:56.98. This 2 to 2.5 seconds faster than 5 other guys from different heats that did qualify by placement in those heats.

Mike Wells failed to qualify and move on in the 100m dash finishing 29th at 10.314. However, considering he could barely run in the 100m and 200m finals at the Valley Championships due to a hamstring injury I was a bit surprised he was able to compete at all. Pretty decent showing by Mike as he ran a PR.

They got rid of the all-American status that includes foreign athletes a few years ago. Now it's just top-8 are first team, 9-16 are 2nd team. Also in the Javelin, WSU will have Damien Odle back next year who redshirted this year.

So. Hayden Bugner out of Andale has cleared 16-4.75 in the pole vault. However, they have raised the bar 6 inches to 16-10.75 which is 2 inches above Hayden's PR. He has missed his first 2 attempts at thee height and has one more attempt at it.

Update: Hayden missed his final attempt at 16-10.75. Hayden will finishe around 31st. Again another young Shocker athlete who has hopefully gained valuable experience competing at this level.

Hunter is off to a good start in the Decathlon with 10.66 in the 100m dash good for 5th place in that event. I believe that is a new PR for Hunter in the 100.

Next up for Hunter is the long jump which usually a good event for him.

Update: According to Shocker Twitter Hunter's 10.66 in the 100 was a PR. I believe his previous best was 11.03 so that is a big PR.

Looking at the field supports my contention that in the multi-events maturity and experience are very valuable. Of the 24 finalists in the decathlon 9 are seniors, 12 juniors, 2 sophomores and 1 is a freshman.

Men's decathlon long jump action on ESPN3 right now.

                    http://www.espn.com/watch/_/id/3093772/ncaa-track--field-outdoor-championships-decathlon-long-jump-flight-2-shot-put-flight-1

Hunter Veith just got off his 1st jump with a 23-8.25 effort that puts him in 3rd place in this event after the 1st round of jumps. Hunter is capable of a 25 foot jump if he really nails it.

Luca Weialnd of Minnesota fouled on his 1st attempt but hit a 24-9 on his 2nd attempt to take the lead. That will be hard to beat.

Hunter improved slightly on his 2nd attempt to 23-10. He is currently in 2nd place as the 2nd round of jump is near the end.

Final round of jumps starting. Hunter needs to hit a good one. Hunter who is now in 6th place is one of the last ahtletes to jump. He hit a big jump on the last jump of the Valley Championships to pull out a win.

Hunter has fallen back to 9th with his final jump coming up shortly. Hunter seems happy with it. He should be he jumps 25-3.5 to catapult in to 2nd place ane will score 987 points in the long jump. That was an impressive, clutch performance. That is just a few inches shy of Hunter's PR.

Hunter move into 3rd place overall after 2 events but there is a long, long way to go but Hunter has to be very happy with his start.

Next up is the shot put which is not one of Hunter's better events. Hunter's PR in the shot put is 13.41m or 44 feet even. I would expect Hunter will fall back in the standings some after the shot put. That is followed by the high jump which is a much better event for Hunter.

Hunter fouled on his 1st attempt in the shot put.

Hunter has a throw of 41-8.75 on the books after his 2nd attempt. While that is well down in the event standings he does have 650 points in his pocket and can go for it a bit more on his final throw.

No improvement for Hunter on his final throw. He falls back to 5th place in the overall standings. Now back to back to better event for Hunter with the High Jump coming up at 5:40 CDT.

Hunter is capable of scoring well in the remaining two events on deck for today, the high jump and the 400m.

Tomorrow he has two storng events, the 110H and the Pole Vault. The Discus, Javelin and 1,500m run are not particular good events for Hunter.

He needs to really do well in the high jump and 400 today to provide himself a bit of a cushion for tomorrow.

Hunter is 1 of 6 competitors to clear 6-4.75 in the high jump. Not exactly sure who is left in the competition.

Looks like Hunter just cleared 6-6 so he is still in the competition.

Looks like there are 6 guys left all having cleared 6-6.

Hunter, along with 4 other guys, has cleared 6-7.

TJ Lawson, the freshman from Kent State and only freshman in the competition, is the 1st to clear 6-8.25. Hunter missed his 1st attempt at tht height.

Hunter unable to clear 6-8.25 and settles for 6-7 which earns him a solid 813 points. 3 guys still jumping.

Hunter is in 4th place after the high jump but not much margin for error.

Kentucky's Tim Duckworth whose family is from Nothern England but who grew up in the USA was ranked 4th coming into the NCAA's with a season best decathlon score of 7,973 which is about 363 points better than Hunter Veith's best score.

Unfortunatley for Duckworth he fouled on all 3 of his long jump attempts and failed to score in that event. He currently is sitting dead last at 24th becuase of that. He will no doubt move up even with the blank slate in the long jump but it will be difficult to make up for that mishap agaisnt this levle of competition.
