  • Roughly 7500 at Rock Chalk Park which is too small for KSHAA championship. Lawrence doesn’t have enough hotels anyway.

    • Rock Chalk Park? Please tell me that’s not the name of it. That’s about the most KU thing ever. Will they have kidde rides there too? A choo choo train? Merry Go Round?

      • Maybe a spiffy new stadium would help the Shocker keep some of the top local talent around. Although I think that is easier said then done as a lot kinds look forward to spreading their wings.

Ryan Barkdull is the best pole vaulter to every compete for Wichita State with top mark of 18-6.5 in 1996 which is a full foot hire than Mark Todd. Ryan, of course, is in the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame.

At the Class 5A meet Saturday at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium, Ryan's son, Bryce, a junior at Andover Central, set the meet record at 17 feet, 1 inch. It was more than five inches short of his state-best and No. 2 national jump of 17-6 1/4 earlier this year but better than his brother Ashton’s meet record that the older Barkdull got to hold for all of one year. Ashton is vaulting in the NCAA West Region Preliminaries this weekend.

The Shocker's top pole vaulter this year was Malakai Schaad, out of Geneseo, IL, whose top jump was 15-7.25.

Wichita teenager Clay Shively, a junior at Trinity Academy, broke Jim Ryun’s 58-year-old state record in the high school indoor mile with a time of 4 minutes, 4.95 seconds in a meet last Friday. Not only did Shively comfortably edge Ryun’s 1965 record time of 4:07.20 by more than two seconds, he also logged the fastest indoor mile time in the country for a high school runner this year.

Just a junior, Clay Shively, one of the fastest athletes in state history is joining the three-time defending national champion Lumberjacks in Flagstaff, AZ next year!

              • Drove by the other day and saw a glorious crowd at Cessna. Looked like a football game save for the lack of any football being played. On the field it looked more like elementary recess.

So sad, so potentially devastating for our future that we did not have a football program restarted long ago. We might be playing in the new, sucky B12 next year (instead of a trailer park chapter of the AAC).
