  • KFDI - WSU rejects bid for stadium project

Wichita State University announced Thursday that it has rejected the only bid that was submitted for the first phases of a project to renovate the former Cessna Stadium.

WSU Athletic Director Kevin Saal said the university will re-advertise for a construction manager to manage a more competitive bid process. He said the university still plans to host the state high school track and field meet in May.

WSU released the following steps that have been taken on the project at this point:
    • Demolition of the east stands of University Stadium was completed in June 2023.
    • Timing of all demolition and renovations will be scheduled to avoid interruption of the KSHSAA Track and Field Championship in future years.
    • To facilitate a more competitively bid project, WSU will re-advertise for a construction manager at risk and work to obtain more competitive bids within the project packages, prior to a summer 2024 project start, inclusive of the scope contained in Phases 1A and 1B.
    • The KSHSAA Track and Field Championship is scheduled for May 24-25, 2024 in Wichita at University Stadium. KSHSAA staff are in the process of evaluating the existing site with plans to release the 2024 schedule in the next few weeks.
    • WSU will work with KSHSAA to set up a team camp area, temporary bleachers, and restrooms on the east side, to host a first-class 2024 State High School Track Meet, negotiating a financial benefit to KSHSAA, given recent events and pending adjustments to the timeline.
    • WSU will ensure there are safe paths for ingress and egress and an easy entrance to the track on the east side for the 2024 meet. Depending on the desires of KSHSAA, the bleacher seating can accommodate several thousand and there will also be an area for team camps and food options for fans and students on the east side.
    • Phase 1A and 1B will begin after the 2024 Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship and includes improvements on the east side of the existing track (underground utility work, seating area for approximately 3,600 with a combination of bleacher seats and terraces designed for tents, free-standing field lights, fencing, ticket pavilion, restroom/storage buildings, and plaza). Bleacher seating on the north and south sides of the stadium is included.
    • Widening the field and a 9-lane track will likely need to occur in summer 2025.
    • The west side of the stadium, capacity around 12,000, will remain standing to allow for continued operation of the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship. Demolition of the west side of the stadium can begin as early as June 2026.
    • Future phases include a new west stadium structure with seating for more than 6,000. The new west stadium would include a single level of press boxes and viewing decks, offices/locker rooms/team room areas for a possible future soccer team, as well as restrooms, concessions and storage rooms.
    • Capacity of University Stadium, when completed, is planned for approximately 13,500.

Why not have the bids lined up before tearing down the east stands? Bad weather in May will now force them to deal with temporary grass, mud, porta-potties, and food trucks.
not a good look for WSU

        From an earlier WSU article
        • Demolition of the east stands of Cessna Stadium will begin immediately after the state track meet this year. Phase 1A begins in the fall with work scheduled to begin on improvements on the east side of the existing track (underground utility work, seating area for approximately 3,600 with a combination of bleacher seats and terraces designed for tents, free-standing field lights, fencing, ticket pavilion, restroom/storage buildings, and plaza). Work is scheduled to be completed before the 2024 Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship.

          • Kansans Come to Wichita State University for Championship Dreams

For three days in May, Wichita State University's campus is where Kansas high school athletes come to compete for championships.

The title chase starts Thursday with Class 5A baseball at Eck Stadium and Class 5A softball at Wilkins Stadium. On Friday, the nation's largest track and field meet begins at University Stadium (formerly Cessna Stadium).

Wichita State is proud to host these events and plans for more in the future as University Stadium renovations continue.

"We think it will be an absolutely premier community facility," director of athletics Kevin Saal told the media in April. "There will be some short-term inconveniences as we get to it, but we are envisioning a day where we can host premier events within a premier facility and accommodate fans in a first-class way."

The track meet, which brings all classes to Wichita, is the marquee event of the weekend with more than 3,500 athletes competing and an estimated 15-20,000 spectators over the two days. Wichita State has served as the host for all classes since 1970, except for 1978 when track renovation split the classes into three locations (Salina, Augusta, Wichita).

It's a pretty monumental thing with all six classes in one place at one time," said Don Steffens, one of the public address announcers since 1975. "Nothing compares to the state meet."

The athletes remember competing in front of thousands of fans and the state's top performers in all classes. The scene is one they often mark as a highlight of their career.

Wichita State wants the visitors to enjoy the experience. University employees drive golf carts to help spectators and athletes move from parking lot to venue. They man welcome tents to answer questions about the events and the university, hand out water and direct people to food. WSU Connect, the university's new community outreach facility, is open during the weekend with an air-conditioned place for people to get water and enjoy yard games.

"We will have, at any given day, anywhere from 10-15,000 people coming to our campus," Pittman said. "You hear a lot of stories of people who graduated from here and haven't been back for a while. They came here because they have someone competing and they get to see campus. They're excited about the changes, and they're excited about the university."

Pittman said the state track meet is estimated to produce an economic benefit of $7 million, not far from the estimated $10 million produced when WSU hosts the NCAA basketball tournament at Intrust Bank Arena.

              • Hope they have multiple large signs near the stadium and in the concourse showing the completed renovations. Right now it looks like an embarrassing dump.

I applaud ADKS for finally doing something to improve the facility no matter how temporarily painful it might be.

I'm still looking at page 12, so that doesn't really help. Do you know what post # it was?

Disregard. It's post 217 and on page 11 for me.

Upon further review, there are a number of posts with links to watch the live feed. I think there are three of them between post 201 and 220.

It's not THAT bad, considering everyone knows it's under construction.

I'm curious to see seating in a few more hours when more events have started and are ongoing.

Ah good point, it might be too early to get a sense of the seating.
