Michael Bryan Breaks Hammer Throw School Record for Third Consecutive Week

Michael Bryan broke the school record in the men's hammer throw again on Saturday. He broke the record for the third week in a row. Bryan's toss of 70.15m/230-2 earned him the win.

Bryan sits at No. 5 in the nation after his record-breaking performance. The AAC Athlete of the Week now leads the conference and is second in the West Region.

Tanner Brown ran a time of 10.47 in the 100 meters, which puts him at No. 6 in the conference and in the top 70 nationally.

Dowdy Elazarig had a personal-best jump in the long jump. He jumped 7.38m/24-2.50. He moves into a tie for 68th in the NCAA this season and is second in the AAC.

The men in the 800 meters all fared well for the Shockers. Zack Penrod, Jed Helker, Josh Cable and Adam Moore went 2-4-5-6. Josh Cable set a new personal best with a time of 1:53.68.

Josh Cable is the young man badly burned in a fire a few years ago but the Shocks hung with him and supported him and he has persevered and obviously is doing well.

"It was cold and blustery (Saturday)and the track meet was certainly depleted due to COVID testing protocols and all of that and yet I felt like our athletes hung in there and had lots of strong performances and did a great job," Rainbolt said. "I'm confident these tough weeks of competition will prepare us well for the American Athletic Conference Championships four weeks from now in Tampa, Florida."

Moore finished the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:47.19 to take second. That time puts Moore at No. 7 in school history.

Taran Taylor had his best throw of the young season, finishing second in the javelin to former Shocker and All-American Aaron True. Taylor threw the javelin 71.37m/234-2 for a season best. His mark puts him at No.15 in the NCAA this year.

Chandler Stiawalt also impressed in the men's javelin. He finished third in the competition with a toss of 63.02m/206-9. That toss puts him at No. 3 in the AAC this season.

Davis Dubbert set a new personal best in the high jump. He cleared 2.04m/6-8.25 to win the men's high jump.

Taran Taylor Wins Conference Athlete of the Week

Taran Taylor had one of the best javelin performances of season and was awarded the American Athletic Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor, the conference announced Wednesday.

Taylor threw the javelin 71.37m/234-2 for a runner-up finish at the KT Woodman Classic. He finished second to only former Shocker All-American Aaron True.

Taylor's throw slots him at No. 15 in the NCAA and No. 6 in the West Region this year. He also leads the AAC in the men's javelin.

It's been interesting to watch Taran come back from his major injury issues to be competitive again. Hope he holds up.

Shockers Head to the Arkansas Saturday & Sunday for a Weekend of Strong Competition

The Wichita State track and field teams head on the road as a complete team for the first time in the 2021 outdoor season.

The AAC Outdoor Championships are just three weeks and the Shockers are going to be in contention for team trophies as well as individual conference titles. Heading into the fifth week of outdoor competition for Wichita State, the Shockers own five conference leading times and marks -- Zack Penrod (1,500 meters), Rebekah Topham (3,000-meter steeplechase), Brady Palen (high jump), Michael Bryan (hammer throw) and Taran Taylor (javelin).

The Shocker currently have 14 top-100 NCAA marks, four of which are in the top 50.
Winny Koskei: No. 37 in the 10,000 meters - 34:12.23
Rebekah Topham: No. 15 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase - 10:04.38
Michael Bryan: No. 7 in the hammer throw - 70.15m/230-2

Zack fought off a strong final lap challenge from an unattached runner to win the 1500m race in a very good time of 3:43.39. In addition, Shocker junior Jed Helker took 3rd in 3:44.22 and Shocker senior Adam Moore was 4th at 3:44.67.

Helker's time and Moore's time are both PR's and both top 6 times in school history. In addition, the Shocks now have 3 of the top 4 times in the 1500 in the AAC this year.

Rebekah Topham breaks runs the only sub-10 minute time in winning the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:58.39 which is about 4.5 seconds off of her PR but is a top 5 national time so far this spring. Shocker Nicole McMillen, a D-II grad transfer, finished 5th in 10:21.19 beating her PR by a little over 4 seconds. Rebekah's time is the best in the AAC so far this year and Nicole's time is 3rd best in the AAC at his point.

In the men's 3000m steeplechase Shocker senior Etthan Kossover broke 9 minutes for the first time in his career finishing at 8.58.45 in finishing 3rd.. Shocker junior Clayton Duchatschek also set a new PR in this race finishing 5th in 9:03.36 beating his previous best by around 20 seconds. Shocker sophomore Britte Magnuson also broke his PR by about 20 seconds with a 9:22.28. Those 3 times are 3rd, 4th and 8th best in the AAC this year.

Winny Koskei will close out the evening for the Shockers running in the women's 5k invitational. I don't think Winny has put up a 5k time yet this season. Wiony ran a 16:50. Not really close to her best time. I am not sure where Winny is in her fitness level. Doesn't seem to be anywhere close to her peak ability. Not sure what is going on with her. Her time is about the 7th fastest in the AAC this season. Not sure if there is enough time left in the season (3 weeks) for her to be in peak physical condition or not. I kind of doubt. If that is the the case that's a big blow to the Shocker women's chances in the AAC Outdoor Championship.

The men's 4X100-meter relay team runs 40.68 for third place. That's the second-best time in the conference this year behind only Houston who leads the NCAA.

Those are 2, 3 and 4 on the AAC performance list this outdoor season.

Antonio Norman ran even faster in the 110-meter hurdles final. He runs a time of 13.81 for third place. 3. Antonio Norman – 13.81(w) 7. Joseph Holthusen – 14.41(w)

That's a season best-to-date in the AAC for Antonio. Joseph would also score in this event with that time.
