WSU makes a lot of sense if you're Joe Ragland. The Shockers just finished second in the MVC behind a sweet 16 team and we return everyone EXCEPT the kid that played HIS position. We're bringing in a 7-footer that Ragland would have likely seen in Hutch and remembered based on the freakish athleticism. We just won 25 games and he can plan on playing in from of 10K plus for 20 games a season. He had a list of nice programs that had been recruiting him, but it's not like Syracuse or Pittsuburg were banging on his door.

Joe Ragland makes a lot of sense for Wichita State. We return everyone except our first team MVC point guard that ran the offense like a clock and hit three pointers and FT's. Joe looks like he could be the type of PG that can do those sorts of things, and possibly even better than Clevin. We have long players, and athletic players. We've got guys that play D and guys that pass and guys that score. What we didn't have was a proven long range AND dribble drive threat that could run the point. No offense to DW on this, but thus far we've only seen it for ten games.

Joe seems like a good fit and I'm excited to see him in Black and Gold!

I agree with everything you said, but not as strongly on those quoted points. Three games could be just a hot streak, five games and we know it's not a fluke, but if you are playing solid PG for 10 D1 games then you have proven it's your position to lose. There's always room for improvement of course but he showed he has the goods to possibly replace Clevin without missing a beat. By the end of the season it seemed we were actually putting up more points when he was in.

Just a minor difference of opinion there though.

And the probability of that is??? The reality is his future is getting a college degreee. But he gave up a full ride scholarship for I guess some partial scholarship.

Most Shocker players who are destined for the major league come into the program you know there is something special about them. He is not even starting for a Shocker team that is struggling.
Darn you and your logic. Stop it!

-Please specifically point out where I said "MLB". Last time I checked unless you are a senior with no where else to go signing bonuses pay out descent mutiple rounds into the draft.
So your saying the minor leagues is a baseball career? Being meat for those on the fast track to MLB?

You get good signing bonuses if your drafted high enough. If your not starting your hardly going to be a high draft pick unless your calling GS an idiot and not playing this amazing MLB talent he got sitting on his bench.

The Fact is Coy's future lies in baseball whether you want to see that or not. Now he may never reach the bigs but he will be drafted again (7th round out of high school) based on potential alone. I for one believe he will also have a career that warrants him being drafted.
I don't see him having a pro-career in either sports. That may change if and when he gets the opportunity at WSU, but right now the fact is he's not starting and it's not like WSU has lineup of MLB hitters in it right now. So either GS is stupid or JC is not living up to the hype.

Isn't this the first time we've had a 6' guard named Joe since Joe Griffin?

WSU in the MVC championship game

1987 _ WSU 79, Tulsa 74 (OT): Gary Cundiff scored 17 points and Steve Grayer added 14 in a win at Tulsa. WSU made 8 of 10 three-pointers, with Cundiff and Joe Griffin going 3 for 3 each.
This also happens to be the last time the Shockers won the MVC Championship.

Back at the Ranch...let's look at the North Platte CC career for our new found PG. He was a high scorer from the PG position at the highest level of juco basketball, averaging 19.5 ppg.; 3.1 apg v. 2.4 topg; 3.1 rpg (not bad). Here is where it gets interesting. He shot 53.4% overall from the field (avg of 12.4 shots per game); 45.3% from deep (avg of 4 shots per game). Oh yea...80.7% from the FT line. I am still perplexed at how a 6-0 PG shoots almost 10 percentage points higher overall from the field than from 3. Wow...maybe he can motivate the bigs on how to finish a possession. This could be a very special kid to watch for the next two years. :goshocks:

The last time we had a 6-0 left-handed point guard (ok, so he was listed at 5-11) was Matt Braeuer. Didn't Matty help lead us to the sweet 16 one year? :D

I think we're set up to have a two-headed monster at PG for the next couple of years. I wouldn't be surprised to see the minutes split at 25-15 either way and both DWill and JRag understanding their role in that.

HC3G is bringing in players to compete for PT and increase the intensity of practices.

DWill had to defend Hannah for a year in practices and had to run the offense with Hannah defending. DWill learned some tricks he will pass on to JRag and JRag will have some stuff to teach DWill.

HC3G is set up to be able to press more and run more transition. WSU didn't do that as much late in the season as they did early in the season. This is the first year for HC3G to have a backup PG that isn't a Fr. I'm eager to see what he can do with that.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

In some circumstances, we could have two point guards on the floor at the same time. It will be hard to keep Rags 3 point ability off the floor.

I think Joe Ragland will be a very nice player for us.

Lots of transition baskets, perhaps. Or he knows when in the lane when it is best to throw one up or pass or really knows how to draw the fouls so his would-be misses are not counted as shot attempts.

If you are flying below the SN radar, aren't you below ground? The only thing we have to worry about Joe is how many games he will have to sit out over the next two years, because his paperwork wasn't handled properly by the Athletic staff. I'll bet GM reviews those doc's personally from now on to make sure.

Am I the only one who thinks the "tainted" comments were just awesome?

Let's all say a short prayer for all the "tainted" recruits who had to choose WSU because their first choice went away. Thank you Lord!

He's a true point guard since high school.
He can penetrate, distribute the ball AND shoot the rock.
His playing history indicates an unselfish team player.
He has some terrific stats and experience at the highest juco level.
He has a bit more size than Clevin and has more speed.
Sounds like a good kid w/great attitude.
                                Still calls his mom.
                                Marshall wants him.

Sounds like a fantastic pick up to me. Welcome aboard Joe!!
