Worst Loss in the history of the program

This is the worst loss I can think of in many years. the 90's don't count because WSU sucked so no expectations.

What I've concluded over the last month is:

*WSU got off to hot start because of crap schedule. we are just a .500 team the last month and getting worse each game. kind of reminds me of Turg's last team. when the wheels came off, no one could put the lug nuts back on the tire.

*clevin hannah has been scouted and exposed for his inability to drive to the basket.

*half court offense is simply not crisp enough - these high ball screens get blown up

*DK is a head case

* man defense gets shredded on motion offense and dribble penetration

* no intensity or fire with this team and bb IQ gets worse each game.

* WTF where Durley, Stutz and Hatch doing on three consecutive possessions late in the game? Throwing up three's with no rebounding and plenty of shot clock left are just not acceptable.

My .02 (for those that care):


* DK has played out of control the last few games.

* Williams had a pretty good night, but not up to Hannah's level. Notice a trend when Hannah is in foul trouble? We lose.

* It was nice to see Stutz get more involved. I hope he can gain confidence off of this performance, and not let a slow start discourage his aggressiveness.

* TM is probably the most scouted player on our team. He has been hounded in conference play. Will he be able to man-up for next season, and realize that he is the #1 offensive threat for the team?

* Durley and Blair seemed to lack any intensity that we're used to seeing.

* Hatch is our POY. No question in my mind. He is the heart and soul of our team.


I also have a few questions:

1. How scared is everyone about the pg position next year? Is landing Carter (from TRCC) a realistic possibility?

2. Should Marshall have red-shirtted KM?

3. Why did we go away from Garrett in the second half?

Given that this isn't the 1990's and we actually had expectations, I'd say "yes"... or pretty damn close to it.

This is the first game that will directly cause me to not go to the next one.

I don't for one minute believe the players don't care. That's just a convenient excuse for disgruntled fans to distance themselves from their passion for a time.

The Shocks are getting exposed as a team that lacks poise and b-ball IQ. Those deficiencies cause situations like last night. When they are not playing well and the other team isn't relenting, they have little left to draw from, especially on the road. It's manifested in stupid fouls, poor shot selection, and junior-high mistakes.

I think these guys bumped their heads on their own ceiling and are in a recoil. I expect them to bounce back, but not to the team we thought we had. I'm expecting two more losses going into St Louis (USU and BU). One win, one loss in the tournament and a bid to the NIT.

I'm pretty sure my comment is not incoherent. cjp27's comment of GS's playing time and when, given his effectiveness, is a good question that logic cannot easily explain.

I know...and there are many reasonable arguments going on,

But two reasons for the WHARRGARBL
a) I had no coherent response to tonights game
b) The team had no coherent response to E-ville

It was all man hugs and bromance on here about 2 weeks ago. Its one loss in 30 game season. Don't be a bunch of chicken littles.

Royal - I used to joke about MT first play of every half of every game. Ram the ball inside, even if its covered, and if you do happen to get it inside, take the shot, good or bad. Now we seem to start both halfs differently -- take 3s, even early in the clock. Not just one, but maybe more. I know am exaggrating, a little, but these are now seasoned players and should have a lot more options.

Player and ball movement are generally slow. Screens, when used, are weakly set and ball handlers don't seem to use them aggressively. I generally don't see the type of hard work, hustle, and constant movement I expected a deep, athletic team to display. I also don't believe our IQ is any lower than any one else. Stupid fouls are most likely lazy fouls. Poor shot selection is generally a lack of good, hard work, off the ball movement.

These things have been happening, more or less, all season long. Our athleticism has generally been enough to carry us. I know we are VERY capable. We have shown big scoring outbursts. We have shown great, lock-down D against good teams. Yet we allow In St and Evansville to shoot .500 on us.

The sky could be the limit for this team, now and in the future. I know they care, I'm just not sure how badly. Evansville and In St has now questioned their "manhood" to the rest of the Valley. I just hope we see them respond with positive answers to that questioning.

I only see our athleticism helping with certain areas of our defense. Obviously, we lack the quickness to defend dribble penetration and perform adequate help defense.

Offensively, our athleticism appears totally unproductive. Athletic teams should be attacking the basket. When we do attack, the defense collapses and we turn it over or we commit an offensive foul. Our post players are content to shoot fade-aways, except for Blair on occasion.

During those games where Hannah has been able to penetrate the middle and get a good shot or pass, we've been successful. Murry can do it but half the time it's not really available and forces it.

From an athletic standpoint we're fine. But we need more quickness, smarts and poise to use it to our advantage.

Well, I'm mad too. But we achieved 20 wins. We beat two ranked teams. We are still in sole possession of second place in the conference and we have three home games left. We are guaranteed a winning record for the season.

There's only one team in the conference that I would gladly trade places with.

Again, we laid a huge egg last night but I could see this coming. I don't think that we have played well for several games including at Northern Iowa inspite of the final score.

Toure dribbling the ball off his leg on the final finely drawn up play, missing the front end of 1 and 1's and throwing lazy passes at the top of the key to allow uncontested layups speaks volumes about the focus of some of the players.

I would like to see a different group of starters on Sunday but I don't think that's going to happen. My starting five for Sunday:

Clevin
Demetric
Hatch
Blair
Stutz

Starting spots are earned in practice. Don't expect the starting lineup to change unless some players carry their recent game-day performances onto the practice court.

I wasn't able to hear the post game interview with Coach but from what I've been able to gather from quotes, he didn't seem caught off guard by this performance last night?

Am I off the mark here or do you think that he's been suspecting this type of letdown for a while based on what's been happening in practices?
