Oregon calling Turgeon?

At A&M he has is program put in. He has not recruited amazingly well but he develops players pretty well. It is tougher to win in the Big 12, but a lot easier to recruit and get into the NCAA tourney. He is slowly putting A&M on the map.

If he goes to Oregon, he will have to rebuild an entire program. It is a tougher to recruit at Oregon. I think it would definitely be able to make Oregon a powerhouse with the way the Pac-10 is right now.

I could see it going either way, but I think he will stay at A&M.

If Turgeon is really committed to following Larry Brown's lead on when to stay or leave a program, he will be taking a job every 3 years, at the minimum.

If he leaves aTm it's a chess move to position himself for the KU job.

Would KU hire a Big 12 coach?...

Might be easier to hire a Pac 10 coach with a better looking record.

Coach Self has said publicly that he will never leave KU, unless KU fires him.

Coach Turgeon is bumping at his ceiling right now.

If he finishes second in the Big 12, maybe somebody from a major conference might give him a sniff, but I doubt it.

A&M is a football school, so the alums are not quite so demanding about basketball results. Besides, the alums are not accustomed to superior basketball results anyway.

A&M tends to hang onto their basketball coaches, long after the coach has proven he is just mediocre. i.e. Barone and the guy, who followed Barone.

I think Coach Turgeon could last at A&M for quite awhile. All he has to do is go to the NCAA most years.

Coach Turgeon is pretty close to the AD.

I guess he could return to WSU, after Coach Marshall moves on.

One benefit about the Pac 10 is you can go 1-5 against the top 25 in non-con and still be a bubble team.

Sounds cheesy but I appreciate all that Turge and his staff did for the program. Even considering the timing of his departure (not his fault) and the number of recruits who took flight (there is some culpability) I wish him well and sincerely hope wherever he's coaching that he and his family are happy. Thank you Coach Turgeon.

All I can say is the timing of this note by Davis in his column is a little odd. I don't know why he'd throw Mark's name out there when the elephant in the room with that job is Mark Few...Oregon alum.

A couple of notes as I read through the thread...A&M had one of the top 30 recruiting classes in the country come in this year. A&M has a top 25 class coming in next year. They also have a committment already from 5 star PG Jamal Branch for the 2011 year. A&M faithful think they'll have the 3 best classes in their history in back to back to back seasons...Recruiting has been very good. In fact recruiting is such a strong point to the A&M job and the base you can pull from...It's a large PRO on your and pro and con list when looking at it from a "job" perspective.

Oregon as a job. Nike money...Brand new facilities funded by that Nike money...Nike brand logo behind that money. You'd be suprised at how kids and their families are interested in the gear your school has. Another note about Nike...There are some top flight kids from Nike AAU teams that some coaches will never get the opportunity to sell their program to because they aren't from a Nike school. Being a Nike school will get you in the door...It's not right, but that's how it works today.

One other thing about Oregon. The fanbase is very supportive of the basketball program. They remind me somewhat of the WSU fanbase, as they are very passionate about the Ducks and create a very nice homecourt advantage...One that flies under the radar, but is every bit as good as any college arena the national press slobbers over.

IMO...Mark Few is going to have some Nike semi-trailers filled with cash sitting in his driveway at some point after this year...The question is whether he unloads or sends them back.
