    • #21=7+7+7=21===== 7'3" WING-SPAN and NBA potential. Is it mid-Dec. yet? We are not use to quality height here much over 6'8". Once he gets here, I hope we get the the other Twin Tower in here for next Season--Benjamin-Eze-Frank. This is reply #121 on this topic and we are on page 7 :D :D :D :D :D :D :D .

      • Well as far as Butler is concerned, I am pulling for the kid. I still see great potential and have visions of him blocking many a shot from the weak side. Right now, I just hope he is working hard both on and off the court because it will, eventually, pay off.

All the hype over Orukpe, has me a bit concerned. I fear that some people may be expecting a bit much from him right away. As for me, my assessment of the team does not include him: (1) I don't see the point until he is actually here; (2) I still think it is a real possibility that he will get red shirted; and (3) even if GM plays him it will only be because his defense presence is at a D-1 level – I have a feeling he is very raw offensively.

In my opinion, anything positive that Orukpe brings to this team, this year will be a bonus. For WSU to have success PT, Clemente and Durley have to play well while rotating between the 4 and 5 spots.

The reason that people have been high of Orukpe is that Marshall has not been shy in saying that he can defend and rebound well enough to start as soon as he arrives. Maybe there is too much hype, but if there is Marshall has bought into it as much as anyone here.

          • First off I think fans of every school naturally tend to make too big a deal out of an unorganized scrimmage. Everyone walks away from these things ecstatic ready to take on the world. Too much is being made out of Gris’ play. Euros are used to structured play and won’t stand out in US streetball.

            - Hatch has a lot bigger frame than I imagined.

            - Butler and Ellis are look-a-like twins…although Ellis looks to be a player.

            - If Durley comes to play with any consistency and can produce off the feeds then he’ll see plenty of minutes.

            - Don’t think this team will struggle to score but what about interior D?

            - For an unorganized scrimmage I thought the overall defensive intensity was good, save for the last 5-7 minutes.

            - If Bret Michael stays for 4 years he will be an invaluable walkon.

Fair enough but I am not going to get excited until I see the kid play. Maybe he does have the basketball skills but he is also going to have to adjust to a lot off the court too. I guess my point is, I am not going to get excited until this kid shows up and gives me a reason to regardless of what GM or anyone else says. Furthermore, I am not of the opinion that WSU basketball season will rise or fall because of a freshman center. I think PT, JTD and Clemente will have more to do with the success WSU basketball or lack thereof.

And you are correct that everyone is making to much out of each players performance during 20 minute non structured scrimmage.

I can't argue with you on the whole. I am not a huge fan of putting all my hopes on a freshman either. Even if EO comes in and is as good as the hype indicates, your point about our other big men needing to carry a lot of the load still holds true.

If EO is as good as advertised (huge defensive presence and "runs like a deer"), it could be a heck of a second half of the season. A very nice Christmas present, so to speak.

                        • I was unable to attend.

I am a little confused about offensive play.

Will the ball be pushed up the floor or will it be walked up the floor?

Just exactly how much will this team run and gun? Not like NC, but more like Florida. (I started to say KU, but I caught myself for fear of being blasted right off the forum.)

                            • Ricky ... I think you are pretty close when you said kind of like Florida. I think we will run and gun about 1/3 of the time starting out, and finish the season at about 1/2 of the time. But even bringing the ball down for half-court, we could have lots of activity on follow-ups, etc.

Phil is pretty good on follow-up shots, he times things pretty well, and can get up with the ball. Clemente is just going to be dangerous all the time, he will be the hub for all kinds of activity. I think CGM might mix it up some to keep teams off balance, something MT didn't do. Durley will get some quick post up shots, and could come on sort of like Coleman later in the season.

on 2nd line - If Ellis wavers a little, I can see PJ continuing as the 2, and Hatch getting some 3 minutes. Depends on the opponents defense and whether we go outside or inside/outside.

It will be interesting when Orukpe gets here. I think he plays right away.
The fact that he excelled at the 'Without Borders NBA camp' means he is getting 'stronger' and definately in a position to play right away. Then, I think Phil/Durley will switch off for 4/5 on 2nd line, and if Clemente ever gets in foul trouble.
