It is possible he could still have a scholly, but it would not count against the limit for the team. Some football teams do that, whether WSU does or not for any sport, I do not know.
Why would he still be on scholarship next season? His eligibility is up and he got 2 years of free education to complete his degree?

Often times athletes will still get free education the year after their elegibility is up but it doesn't count against the scholarship count. They are STUDENT-athletes.

I think it's more likely that Griskenas still be on scholarship next season than some of the others.

If he's on a scholarship next year, it won't be a basketball scholarship. And if they could give him a basketball scholarship, whose would he take, Coy's?

Griz had three years of JUCO with a redshirt and is now in his second year at WSU. He will not be one of the 13 basketball scholarship players next season. He is not or should not be eligible for any more basketball per the NCAA rules. Had he not had a RS in juco, he likely would have been red-shirted this year. Someone correct me if I am wrong about his three years of JUCO.

I think there is zero chance of Gris coming back on scholarship, and even given that; he is still more likely to return than some of the others. Clearer now?

Why should a player get more than 4 years of free education? I'm fully aware that most college students today take their time to complete their degree. IMO if a student-athlete cannot complete their degree in 4 years (barring a redshirt) then anything past that time should be on their dime.

Mind you this is coming from a person who worked 35-40 hours a week while working towards undergrad and graduate degrees.

Just happens. I know one former WSU student-athlete who was (to the best of knowledge) a 4.0 WSU student and took 5 years to graduate. WSU paid for all 5 years. This alum is a credit to the university.

I was under the impression that a player gets a maximum of two years at a juco. If he redshirts one year he only plays one year. I could be wrong but I also don't believe Gris redshirted. He played 8 games his freshman year prior to the knee injury.

3 years at a juco is not that uncommon. Dunno if that's the case with Gris or not.

What in the world does having a redshirt have to do with graduating in either 4 or five years? One is related to basketball; the other, to academics. Why do you think player "A" who doesn't redshirt should be required to complete his education if 4 years, but player "B" who did not weigh enough in his first year and redshirted should get 5 years and player "C" who played his first three years, but gets injured early in his fourth year but gets his degree, redshirts and returns for a 5th year should get 5 years of scholarship? IMHO, they should all be equal and have up to 5 years to get their degree.

If Mantas does not graduate in the spring, the I am pretty sure that an academic scholarship will be available, either partial or full.

Plus he might get a job in the Athletic Department.

I do not believe any of the above violates NCAA rules.
