And we have some soft spots in our lineup which will either have to tremendously step up their game, or they may have to be replaced. If we are to shake the "mid-major" label in the near future, we will have to have less of the "first-year, inexperienced, young or waiting-to-adjust to college life" syndromes that we currently have.

Dude. Marshall has taken 7 out of 10 teams to the NCAA tourney during his tenure as a head coach!! And that includes last season where he didn't have the benefit of recruiting! You are going to sit there and tell me that you want a new coach after his second year of rebuilding?

I think the admin's should give you an honorary and permanent title under your nickname: WuShock HUMP!

I'm a Marshall fan but your post is silly. Maybe someone can win the Big South with tall, athletic players who can't shoot but that probably won't work in the MVC; winning the Big South tourney is all you need to do to get to the NCAA tourney. Gregg Marshall needs to adjust to the demands of the Valley; I think he'll do fine but his old record with only one NCAA tourney win in 8 games doesn't prove anything.
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:

If we were in one of those stupid discussions about "our coach is better than your coach", you would of course have a point .. that's not what this thread is about. This guy starts a thread saying if we have two bad seasons he wants to chuck a winning coach with a proven track record to the curb. I didn't say it was a top-10 in the nation coaching record. It's a very high percentage record and I don't care what conference you play in, if you are winning the conference every year you are doing something right. Why else did we bring him here, if it wasn't for how he performed at Winthrop? What coach with a losing record that can't get to the NCAA tourney would you like to replace him with?

Actually your post is silly also. I remember watching Winthrop a few times and it seems he had decent offensive teams...didn't light it up all the time but not THAT low scoring or bad as what we are witnessing now. So he had tall, athletic players who were decent on offense...that WOULD do fine in the Valley, we just aren't quite there yet.

Also he may only have 1 win in 8 games, but that was with a VERY low seed pretty much every year. And we all know that has ALOT to do with your success in the tourney...especially to make a deep run. And yes, all he needed to do was win the Big South tourney to get to the NCAA tourney but I believe most years he went ahead and won the regular season Big South crown ALSO.

His track record at Big South may not indicate that he will DEFINATELY be successful in the MVC, but it can't be discounted all together either....it definately matters.

I beleive it was year before HCGM took the WSU job, he brought Winthrop into Mo State for the Bracketbuster and kicked the Bear's arse's by 20 or so. That same year, we lost to the Bear's.

His Winthrop team would have won the MVC that year. He will have no problem coaching in the MVC once his players mature and he has the pipeline full.

shockerfan: I agree with your comments. Getting to the NCAA tourney doesn't prove anything except that you're the best in a (usually weak) Big South Conference but it sure beats being the worst in the Big South. WSU hired Gregg because we think he'll be successful at WSU. My confidence in HCGM is unshaken. At the same time, one should not throw logic out the door; success in the Big South does not equal success in the Valley.

BTW: My comment about "tall, athletic players who can't shoot" was more a comment about our current team than about Marshall's Winthrop Eagles' teams. I didn't go back and look at his old teams. My Bad!! Of course, Garrett Stutz and Toure' Murry can shoot. :D

Cool, I agree with you then. Cause you are right, success in the Big South doesn't guarantee success in the MVC

Most of us expect WSU to be the SIU of 2010-2020 and win the Valley every year under Gregg Marshall. Right?

Would Winthrop have beaten Sweet16 SIU for the Valley title in 2006-7?

I have the utmost confidence in GM and I firmly believe he will bring a great amount of success to our program. We all know what he started off with his first year and we are just starting to see the increasing caliber of players he will continue to recruit over the next few seasons. And every year it is going to get better. You gotta believe!

This year sucks, next year will be better and the following year we win the Valley, storm SL, and will have our dance card made out for at least the second round at the NCAA. And from there on, there is no limit.

But the thing I really like about GM is - He brings excitement to the program with just about everything he does. Hell, nobody can argue that it is dull around here for long. And that is saying a lot for even a season such as this.

I hope you're right. Because if we lose at home to SIU next week and the free fall officially commences, GM is going to need to pull a rabbit out of his nether-regions to keep ticket sales up next year. And that will put him in the position of having to show massive improvement in a single season to stem the tide of negative momentum in order to sustain revenue inflows. And keep his job.

I realize I am getting ahead of myself. However, Cohen-esque results with similar team attitude has not sent a Chris Matthews-esque shiver up my leg so far.

HCGM will deliver within the next 3 seasons. As many have said, myself included, this season will be rocky (oh, so), next season (2009-2010) will begin to show signs of marked improvement, IF providence is with us 2010-2011 will be the year we're a top 2 team. 2011-2012 is the year we sustain our momentum. My belief in this timeframe in no way diminishes the frustration of poor performance.

                              Go Shocks!!!!

In a couple of years when we make our NCAA run, we will look back on this season and wonder why some people would think HCGM is not the right man for this team. This is a rebuilding season with many unexperienced players. Many are still learning how to compete in Div. 1. There will be sunshine again.
